Agreed, j. With Wayne's his rock-hard head, taste-for-battle 'n work-rate, an eraser woulda made him a lock for ATG.

 

If Calzaghe's and Tunney's mitts were tougher and they hadn't suffered so many hand injuries both would have better demonstrated the power they definitely possessed.

 

Lightweight history may have turned out somewhat differently if Buchanan had been blessed with power..

Two welterweights come to mind
1 Jack Britton, who had 344 bouts would have certainly been the top welter of alltime
if he could have hit hard.Was stopped ONE time [first year] only...Amazing...
2 Billy Graham-who I saw from a prelim fighter was a great classic boxer, with a cast
iron chin, who in 128 bouts was NEVER kod or dropped...He held his own with the likes of
Kid Gavilan,Carmen Basilio and middleweight Joey Giardello...Wow what he could have been ,with good punching power...In top 5 of Welterweights, IF....

 

With only 11 KO wins in 256 fights Memphis Pal Moore was one of the most featherfisted fighters of all time. Even so he defeated 10 world champions and 7 HOFers... imagine how great he could have been with a KO-punch!

 

I do wonder about just what kind of power he actually possessed. He dropped Walker in their first fight, and knocked out Kid Lewis the final time he regained the WW crown. We have footage of Lewis stopping Tom Gummer in a single round, Johnny Basham and Boy McCormick. We know he could hit. Lewis was stopped four times in 299 fights. He was counted out three times, once when he was in his teens, once by the deadly hitting and much bigger Carpentier (in a famous match on youtube), and by Britton. As knockout wins go, Britton KO 9 Lewis in Canton, Ohio on St Patrick's Day 1919 is a monster.

Back in 1957, Fleischer rated Jack only behind Barbados Joe Walcott and Mysterious Billy Smith. (He rated a peak Robinson at five in the welterweight class, as you know, but other posters may not be aware of.)

 

Duodenum, my first Ring Record Book is from 1961... where SRR of course is ranked #5 at middleweight. So I'm wondering: when did he first make Fleischer's list at welterweight - and who did Fleischer drop to make room for him at middleweight?
