I think the best HW example since then is Bowe-Holyfield III. It was big enough that the fact no title was on the line was overlooked.

It's a decent fight, but not up to the other two classics,a movie comparison might be Godfather 3, to parts 1 & 2.

The fight was for the NABF belt, which pretty much solidified that belt's legitimacy as a regional title.

As to the fight itself, despite the premature end to round two (which robbed Ali of a possible knockdown) and the clinching, it was still fought at a high level of skill, and had enough sustained action to make it far better viewing than a lot of heavyweight title fights in the current era. Frazier had some nice moments, but in general, Ali's combination punching and ring generalship ruled the day in a fight that would have been considered pretty good had it not been sandwhiched btween two all-time classics.

Are you sure it was Rodin two? I thought it was Renoir three ?

Monetarily , Frazier looked like he might be going to Toulouse by a knockout, but managed to Lautrec Dali's advantage ,and , Van Gogh himself back into the fight.

Tony Picasso, the ref, should have been less lenient with Dali's Holbein, and Rembrandted him more

Michael Angelo Dundee ,gave Dali a right Jackson Pollacking for letting Frazier of the hook, but eventaully Dali took over and definitely deserved the Degascision.:rofl

I thought it was actually a good fight, the problem was that it was sandwiched in between the 1st & 3rd which IMHO were the 2 best HW fights of all time - the 3rd being the best.

If you're an Ali fan, you'll like this fight. If you're a Frazier fan, you probably won't.

The big difference between the 2 bouts was in 73 there was definately a new sheriff in town. Not too many folks had bought into Lewis at that time and certainly Tyson was more popular. It was more like a bout where it was the only way either guy could secure a big payday. Be that as it may, big event non title bouts just don't lend themselves to recent boxing and the world of 4 titles at each weight.

Frazier got rocked with a right hand, and the ref seperated them for some reason, preventing a knockdown.

Perez claimed to have had an auditory hallucination, hearing the bell when it had yet to go off.

Looking at the replay yet again, I don't think Joe was even close to going down after that initial big right. He was stunned, but defending himself competently as he backed into that neutral corner. When Perez stepped in, he immediately turned and skipped towards his own corner, and displayed no distress when the action resumed. Muhammad nailed him well, but Stander and Ramos also clocked him early in the opening round, and Joe rebounded with no break in the action both times. Frazier's chin wasn't that bad, and he later stood up to far heavier punches over the first four rounds of the Foreman rematch.

This match was scored on a rounds basis, not the ten point must system. I think the most that can be suggested is that Perez's premature intervention might have cost Ali a 10-8 round if that system was in force. Otherwise, while it makes for a fine manufactured hyperbolic controversy, I don't buy the suggestion that it had any substantive influence on the outcome. Joe had his back to the corner, he was defending himself, and there was little time left in the round. If Ali was going to drop him, he would have done it with that first big right, as Bonavena did in 1966.

Regardless, this was the best single punch Ali produced in 41 rounds of action with Frazier, and it placed Joe in a position of having to respect Muhammad's power with ten rounds left to go. In light of that fact, and considering how early it occurred in this bout, nailing that right may indeed have been a pivotal moment in Ali's favor, no matter what Perez did after. (ABC's Cosell footage provides a much better angle than the Jacobs narrated film, which has Joe's back to the camera when Muhammad lands it.)

Perez thought he heard the bell.I believe this was the fight he actually put his finger in Frazier's eye during breaking them up.
    Not his best night.

:lol:I still don't like Ali/Frazier 2 and not because I'm a Frazier fan. I enjoyed the other two and both guys were the winners imo in the third fight. Hard to say someone "lost" that it was a war that displayed great heart from both men. Of course you know I like the first fight too for obvious reasons lol.
