Well I can't blame Futch for stopping it but I know that must have hurt Frazier. Not only losing, but losing to Ali in a fight he could've won. Ali fainted from I think exhaustion so I'm glad in a way that the fight was stopped.

This was quite possibly the biggest non-title fight of all-time.

I'm referring to the first fight.

Futch did the right thing, Joe couldnt see those right hands coming,he might have been stopped in the last round ,or even worse, either way no one was a loser in that fight imo.

Oh sorry I thought you were talking about the third fight my bad.

My opinion too. Both men gave it their all and have my utmost respect as fighters.

It was a good fight, obviously doesn't measure up to the other two fights. There's more strategy on Ali's part which was a bit of holding (You could definitely call excessive) and the ref made a botch in Ali which helped Frazier. Incompetence went both ways. Frazier had trouble smoking and Ali seemed to stick and move pretty well. I think he was pretty mobile and sharp. It's got to be one of Ali's best 70's performance. I've heard this fight got called a draw from Frazier fans. Crazy talk, it was a very comfortable win for Ali who easily picked up 8 rounds. A solid fight on its own right, but clearly lacking when looking at the trilogy. Frazier forced Ali to fight much better in the two other fights, and Ali clearly got away with a little too much of holding.

It was for the time of 1974...... I believe both Ali and Frazier received purses of $850,000 G's for that rematch fight at MSG... Ali and Frazier split 5 mill. down the middle earlier in fight # 1... I believe Ali was paid 4.5 million and Frazier got 3 million dollars for the fight in Manila in '75...

Me being an out and out Ali fan,I was devastated after Fight Of The Century ! I've always respected Frazier, though. I would support Joe anytime he was fighting, unless it was against Ali,of course.

It most certainly was. There was far more interest for it than there was for George Foreman's title defence against Joe Roman 4 months earlier.

No one need be ashamed of losing to the Frazier of that fight the man was demonic in his intensity.
As Ali said , " whatever the price ,he will pay it".
