there was a similar thread on this topic the other day. I'll repost what i put in there.

The WBA has taken the idea of an Interim Champion, overdosed it with Acid, and ran screaming down the road with it. They name a super champion, a "regular" champion who probably isn't as popular or only holds their belt, an interim champion which is supposed to be a term for someone who is named champion because the actual champion can't defend it, and then they'll rarely even make the interim and regular champ fight, let alone the super champ. So sometimes the interim is the number 1 contender as far as the WBA goes.

The WBC usually lets the international champion be number 1 contender but I guess they let him languish for a bit if he isn't a well known fighter. Silver title is "supposed" to be the number 1 contender for the regular belt but they'll usually just let him defend the silver belt or something. They usually strip you for some stupid reason and let someone else fight for your belt, especially if you're mexican. Sulaiman has already made it well known that he loves him some mexican fighters. Hell, they put Morales as number 2 in their JWW rankings without him ever having fought at 140. I doubt they'll let him fight Devon Alexander. Instead, they'll probably strip Devon for being a unified champion and let Marquez and Morales fight for their 140 belt so one of them can be the first 4 weight mexican champion.

It's a bit like the WWE's Intercontinental Championship probably.

Wouldn't the WBC International title be more like the WWE Intercontinental title?

    No. From the WBC:

"This belt [The Diamond Belt] was created as an honorary championship exclusively to award the winner of a historic fight between two high-profile boxers."

so that means the wbc can make money from any big fight that has nothing at all to do with them, by putting the diamond belt up for grabs.
has any fighter actually won one?

I'm not sure if theres a fee that comes with it.

I think it's more of a trophy than a belt.

That's exactly what it is - they just re-named the interim title, in a bid to make it sound more prestigious.

As for the diamond belt - you can bet your life there's a fee attatched to it!
