I heard on a radio show this week that Chael has issued a challenge to Shogun Rua to fight him at 205, and says that if Rua does not accept then he wants to meet Georges St Pierre at a catchweight somewhere between 170 and 185. Three questions for you all... 1.Do you think either guy will accept, do you think either fight will happen? 2.How do you think a Sonnen-Shogun fight would go at 205? 2.How do you think a Sonnen-GSP fight would go at a catchweight between 170 and 185? Please answer all 3 Q's :good
I'm choosing Rua and GSP. Rua's Muay Thai is lethal and I think Rua has good grappling skills. Plus I think he can threaten with subs when needed. I also chose GSP because he would strike more. I'd love to see him wrestle Chael and possibly overcome him! Sonnens wrestling and tenacity makes him a threat for anyone though!
This Sonnen character has been talking epic **** man. http://mmajunkie.com/news/20641/ufc...t-pierre-brock-lesnar-to-current-hit-list.mma
Sonnen would be totally man handled if he fights Rua, GSP would be a more open match but i still think GSP would end up winning
Both would win. What people seem to discount completely was that Anderson Silva went into that fight hurt. That said, Sonnen against GSP would be a pretty good fight. But I think GSP would beat him at his own style, cause I doubt Sonnen can out G&P GSP. GSP has unbelievable wrestling skills as he normally wrestles fighters at 205 when he trains.
GSP beats him at his own game, and to top it off, GSP looks to finish, maybe even subs him. He could have a good shot against Rua, he controls on the ground very well, and Rua's knees are shot.. Rua is decent with subs, I would expect this fight to end up on the ground, it would be Sonnen's to lose, and he probably would end up leaving a limb hanging and get subbed. He might even dispute it, until he watches the replay and clearly see the agony and terror on his face while his hand furiously taps. Then, he will admit he tapped.
He stands a better chance with Shogun, simply because Shogun is fairly weak at Sonnen's strong point. GSP has great wrestling, Shogun doesn't. Both are better than him at most aspects of MMA, and GSP might be able to hold his own in wrestling, but in the Shogun fight he has at least 1 advantage. I wouldn't pick him to win either fight.
I think both Rua and GSP would beat Sonnen... despite how good Sonnen is. Rua would murder him in fact. Shogun is basically a small heavyweight, he's an absolute tank of a light-heavy. He made Machida look small and soft by comparison when they fought. If you look at how strong Rua is when he's grappling with other natural lightheavys (look at how he easily he would take down L'il Nog in the MW GP for instance) then I believe you would see that Rua would be clearly bigger and stronger than Sonnen, who is extremely strong himself at middleweight but would find Rua a whole different ball game. Throw into the mix that Rua is a far, far more powerful striker than Chael and has a better submission game, I really don't see how Sonnen can win this fight at all. A Sonnen-GSP fight would be much closer, but I'd still back GSP to pull it off. It really would be fascinating to see how guy with the best takedown defence in the game (GSP) coped against a much bigger and probably stronger world-class wrestler like Sonnen. Chael probably would manage to get a takedown or two through the bout, but I really don't think he'd get as many as most people think, and I don't think he'd be able to keep GSP down and dominate him the way he does with most other guys. Ultimately, GSP is a lot quicker, a lot smarter and a lot more versatile. His stand-up is better as well. I see Georges edging the decision in a very competitive fight through landing the better strikes, and maybe getting some eye-catching takedowns himself. He just has more to his game than Chael, who is basically brilliant at what he does, but not very good at anything else.
I think Rua beats Sonnen at 205, but Sonnen beats GSP at a catchweight or above. And most of all I believe that Sonnen does not deserve a rematch with Silva before Belfort gets his shot. Sonnen did his best and lost. It was a decisive loss and he needs to man up to it.
I wouldn't pick him against either. Shogun would destroy Sonnen with his superior striking and size. A fight with GSP would be much closer. Sonnen's size, strength and wrestling ability would make it close, but ultimately GSP has much more to his game and is a much smarter fighter and would pull out a close decision.
