I'm up late so i might be a little tired but i decided to glance over to Boxrec and see Michael Spinks resume and it is for sure overrated, i don't think he deserves to be in the top 3 light heavies ever, top 5 yes but no higher

Marvin Johnson (pretty good fighter, has a few nice wins)
Eddie Mustafa Muhammed (good fighter but far far far from being great)
    Dwight Muhammad Qawi (Great fighter)
    Johnny Davis (ok fighter)
    Eddie Davis (almost a bum)
    Yaqui Lopez (Good fighter)

i mean that's all he has on his light heavy resume...:?

When I'm faced with this question, I ask myself......"Name a fighter; they say he's great. So who'd he beat? In this case, go through a mental list of light-heavyweights and whom they beat. Did Foster beat that many greats? Jones?"

Probably not, but to split the kinds of hairs necessary to make any real distinction between the #3 and #5 LHW seems a bit trifling, doesn't it?

The point being of course, these guys were still great. We know this because they had longevity and other attributes, and precious few have fought and beat handfuls of Hall of Famers.

He has a better light heavyweight resume than most. I do think he, along with Qawi, were a little lucky to make their name on late 70's fighters who had pretty much worn themselves out by having numerous wars against each other. Saad Muhammad, Marvin Johnson, Yaqui Lopez, Mike Rossman, none were at their best and you could argue that Eddie Mustafa Muhammad wasn't either considering his failed attempt at moving up to the heavyweight division and the subsequent difficulties making the 175 lb limit.

I think Michael Spinks was taking part in a pretty good Light Heavyweight division and he all but cleared it out. You can't ask more of a fighter, and you can't appreciate his title reign until you actually watch the footage. Watch how he handles Johnson and Qawi. He didn't really come close to losing at 175lbs, despite being a slow starter and giving away early rounds. Compare this resume to Bob Fosters and who do you think has the better LHW resume?

    What's your top 5 LHW's Body Head?

I was just about to make a smartass remark regarding this but then I thought "Don't take another classless cheap shot, Boxed Ears." But, really, I should have.

if u think i have roy jones light heavy resume over spinks your are surely wrong. I do rank Jones at about 10 tho.

I mean Spinks is still a great fighter including his two wins over Holmes and win over Cooney

Actually thinking about it Jones resume is obviously not as good as Spinks at light heavy but it isn't too bad and not as far off as u think it is Addie.

    Antonio Tarver
    Clinton Woods
    Merqui Sosa
    Eric Harding
    Virgil Hill
    Montell Griffin
    Julio Cesar Gonzalez
    Reggie Johnson

    not too shabby.

Edit: Addie i'll post my top 10 Light Heavies tomorrow for you.

Yeah, I dread to think of the horrible knockouts those fighters would have been subjected to in 15 rounders with Spinks. Hill and Tarver are good scalps, but Spinks surely has the more impressive resume at 175lbs, and guys like Lopez and Johnson were as tough as they come. They may not have had the craft of world caliber opposition at this point in their careers, but they would give anyone a rough time whereas guys like Woods would never offer that level of resistance.

Micheal cleaned out and unified his division. How many other guys have done that in the last 30 years?

    This.

Qawi has got the most mileage out of it.excellent fighter, but a prime example of a guy who is usually accorded a level of accomplishment higher than anything i ever saw him do in the ring.Post-spinks his career was very much a let down, with only the odd high point like his resurgence against Holy.A bit like Michael Nunn, he mde little effort to consolidate and come back better at his natural weight.

Hm, I think when it goes purely by win-resume, he isn´t Top5, perhaps not even Top10. But his dominance and overall work makes up for it. Others also lost. He did not.

Hagler said he thought Spinks division was weak in the other weeks OntheRopes interview, was it considered weak at the time? It looks a decent era to me but Spinks gets a little overrated round here for my money
