Young was trying to fight him in that 76/77 timeframe. But Jimmy sure did not have a lot of pull as far as management/matchmaking goes. But it was a local type fight that could be sold. The Holmes camp was fighting a lot of 3rd tier guys during that time and a prime Young is a huge step up. It was a big step up fighting Shavers the first time but a Young fight is different than that. It was a bout I wanted to see happen but like lots of potential type fights that make sense, they just don't seem to get made.
Well,if Young had been given the nod over Norton in their 1977 title eliminator,he would have faced Holmes in June 1978 instead of Ken. Holmes would have won a clear decision. His better firepower would have clinched it. Because of styles,it would n't have been a thrilling fight to watch.
Jimmy Young was known as "can't crack an egg but sure as hell can box" Jummy Young. The Foreman knockdown was 1000% an exhausted Foreman practically falling down on his own. Young basically let himself go after Norton. He lost both times to Ossie. Holmes was faster, tougher, had a far more dominant jab and would have likely won a lopsided decision over any Jommy Young.
you're welcome techks! if you want my videos instantly without me posting them here maybe you could subscribe to me?
I hate asking people to subscribe, but you seem to appreciate my vids haha anything you want me to upload? right now i was uploading cooney fights because i had a few of his fights on dvd
Larry had much faster and more active hands than the most formidable guys Young faced (Ali, Foreman & Norton). I can't really see a way Jimmy wins this, unless we match him up with an uninspired Holmes.
Holmes was still rather inexperienced by 1976/1977. The first Earnie Shavers fight in 1978 was his first really impressive performance. It's possible that Holmes manages to outpoint Young in a close and ugly fight, but it's also possible that Young has too much experience for Holmes at this stage. Prime for prime I have Holmes winning a comfortable but dull decision.
No, not for now because I still need to see more of your Cooney vids that you posted like the ones with Dennis & Chaplin. I'm satisfied with what you have posted good job man:good.
I favor Holmes here because he had more POP and the better jab and although the fight would be closely scored Young lacked the power of the right hand that would be key to beating Larry...but then again although not prime, Larry was confused with rhythm breaking style of Spinks and was confused by angles and flurries. Also at the time Young and Norton fought a close on and so did Holmes and Norton. Jimmy would be the best boxer/mover that Holmes faced other than M. Spinks so it could be a close on but I doubt Jimmy would get the Nod with King in the mix
I don't know if I'd say Larry was confused by Spinks ... at 35 plus he simply lacked the speed and reflexes to consistently time him ... a prime Larry would have stopped Michael in under five rounds .. if you watch his fight with Leon, Larry was excellent at timing Leon who tried the same fast/jerky head movement style .. Holmes took his head off ..
Bum, I agree that Young was also a pillow-puncher, but some folks here think Young was a real bomber.... Why? Hell if I know.... Who'd Young ever park that was any good?? Holmes was just a cut above Jimmy Young... Holmes out-boxes Young in a tactical 15 rounder that's somewhat close after 10 rds, but then Holmes takes full control late in the fight and Young goes into a shell looking to last out the distance..... Holmes by decision or 14th round TKO..... MR.BILL:hat
