I've heard it said that being Unorthodox can be a plus against a fighter that does everything by the book, resulting in extremely crude fighters with little to no technique beating men who are world class operators and boxers.

The schooled fighter simply doesn't know what to expect. There's no rhythm or reason, its no longer as simple as slipping a jab or a right hand and countering as would be the case against another well schooled fighter.

So what examples are there of this happening, and what makes these upsets so possible?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some fights that come to mind...

    Antonio Margarito against Miguel Cotto.

Past prime or not, Limon beating Lionel Rose is a good example. Rose was a simply amazing boxer, actually putting on a clinic against Fighting Harada. Limon had a handful of similar wins throughout his career.

Carlos Maussa against Vivian Harris is a good example I doubt anyone else would mention.

    Carlos Baldomir against Zab Judah.

    What other examples are there?

Mijares getting thrashed by Darchinyan is a good example of this.

Cotto was skilled but had many flaws but it is a great example of skill vs will.

    Mayorga/Forrest

    Segura/Calderon

    Maidana/Ortiz

    Monzon/Napoles

Griffin/Toney. Montell wasn't crude but very unorthodox and by this logic, these two fights can be added aswell:

    Jones/Toney

    Jones/Hopkins

I was a big Mijares fan. Stayed up late watching it on a horrible feed...and it genuinely hurt.

Jones was in no way shape or form a crude fighter. He was unorthodox, but was also refined.

Several of Pac's wins could qualify. The ones over Barrera and Marquez especially.
