Fascinating...makes him sound almost like Wladimir Klitschko. You got to cry bull**** on the bodyshots though. If a guy has no defence to infighting, and he's soft to the body, he winds up retired, not lauded.
As McGrain says he does sound like Wladimir Klitschko. Maybe his vulnerability to body punching is an over exaggeration, but it probably is a genuine, and glaring, flaw or weakness. Thanks for this.
I think there's something to what Choyinski said; but I've got to wonder, given Jackson's general success, whether he was that badly flawed. Also, that Jackson defeated Frank Slavin, a well regarded body pounder, must be remembered.
Corbett also made comments about Jackson being in a bad way from body punches after their fight. I still look on Jackson as a historical top-20 guy. I think Fitzsimmons ... well, I'd favor Ruby, put it that way.
Jo Choynskis opinion is certainly to be taken verry seriously, but it should be noted that he was in the minority among his peers on this issue.
Got you. Do you have any other contemporary quotes? I recently researched Jackson (just briefly for Boilermaker's decade tournaments) seems to be one of the very first boxer-punchers (at heavyweight anyway.)
"Corbett related that he once saw speedy Joe Choynski spar with Jackson and not manage to touch him with a glove. He added that on another occasion Jackson boxed with Bob Fitzsimmons in an exhibition and it was like a professor giving a pupil a lesson". Nat Fleischer "Unbeatable. The greatest of all masters". Frank Slavin "The greatest fighter who ever breathed". Bob Fitzsimmons "Jack Johnson never equaled Jackson for science and skill" Lord Lonsdale "Jackson could defeat any fighter I have ever seen" Jim Corbett "He’s a wonder, make no mistake about his ability. He is one of the finest specimens of fighting man I’ve ever seen". Arthur Chambers "The best boxer I ever saw" Eugine Corrie
That's exactly what I was thinking - maybe Jackson humiliated Choynski - afterall Jackson took Corbett to the wire didn't he?? Maybe the stuff about Jackson not being able to take it much to the body is why the messed up racists often pinned any black fighter as not being able to take it to the body? It does seem a bit ridiculous that those who witnessed him generally talk about him as peerless yet Choynski says he wouldn't survive against people of future generations
