    Homes barely toughed it out

Round 9 is one of the greatest examples of the guts of a champion i have ever seen

I pussed out. 114-114. Bothers me that I scored it a draw. That's what I saw, but I would rather have picked a winner either way.

I knew nobody at the time who saw it and had Witherspoon winning. Nor did I read any accounts in the aftermath which gave Spoon any better than a draw. The vast majority I read and had contact with felt Witherspoon blew it, and gave it to Holmes.

Having an even number of rounds in a title fight is bull****. If Holmes-Witherspoon had been scheduled for the championship distance, we could have had a conclusive outcome either way.

Under old newyork rules In rounds I had holmes one round up. On points If round 9 was a 10-8 round for witherspoon it might make it a draw. Im not sure I would make witherspoon a 10-8 winniner that round since holmes fought back prety well. I scored this fight a lot of times and i never had witherspoon winning. either way holmes remains champion.

I scored it 7 round to 5 in Holmes's favor. Witherspoon put on a great show but Larry showed that even though he was in decline, he still could dig deep and pull out a win.

I taped it live back in May of '83...... Great heavyweight fight of the 1980s that goes underrated on the whole............. I gave it to "The Homer" by a **** hair....... That card also featured "Dokes-Weaver 2" that was tallied a draw..... Dem were the good old dayz..... I miss them, too.........

Angelo Dundee killed me with his 9th round rant: "Larry Holmes is out of it. He's out of it. He's out of it. Holmes is out of it." JESUS CHRIST!!

At least one mag did actually score it for Witherspoon by a point.

One talking point was actually how he came out on his toes in, hmmmmmmm 11 or 12 thinking he was ahead as you allude to. They said he should have been going after Holmes. Holmes said he thought he was crazy and the heat had got to him lmao.

Even over 15 we could have had 7-7-1 or whatever, tho a draw is less likely. Both were still in fine fettle.

I had Holmes by a solid point. The best he could get imo was a draw.

One overlooked aspect imo is how deep Holmes took Witherspoon right after being in big trouble himself. I think this more than anything kept Spoon a bit cautious in the last rounds.

Mr Bill, I believe that if the old Georgia Deacon, Tiger Flowers, was alive and viewing this room that he would ask you the same thing he did Harry Greb during their last bout, that you try not to take the Lords name in vain.
