Roy can show off all he wants, but he was done quicker than you can say check hook! Roy was able to not get hit because of speed and off the chart reflexes. He could throw lead rights from miles away like a sniper. So essentially your O is your D because you're never in range. Give me a less spectacular but more fundamentally sound fighter any day. Those guys who can fight forever because they roll and slip punches properly. Roy never had to roll with punches. As soon as those freak reflexes were gone, reality set in and he started getting knocked out.
As soon as Roy began to age in terms of reflexes, legs, speed etc he didn't have the balance, strategic mind, technical excellence and fundamentals to fall back on. He could have worked on them but he would have had to start pacing himself, working behind a solid jab, catching shots, breaking his guys down to the body etc These are all things he could do but generally fail to embody all in one fight after fight. I think he began to do so recently but now it is too late as he really is done unlike this video where despite being past it he still had something to give.
That's a bit harsh. With or without steroids Roy was a phenom athlete who's demise was always gonna come quick as he had nothing to fall back on when those reflexes left. Yes, he might've dabbled in a bit of roids, but that takes nothing away from what he did. It's very hard to see any 168 or even 175 pounders beating Roy at his peak, he was that darn freakish.
There is hardly anybody H2H who beats the Jones who fought Toney in my opinion, an absolute masterclass.
Sorry mate but I can't agree with this. Taking steroids is illegal, the boxing officialdom need to be much firmer with drug cheats than they currently are. Someone's life could be at stake.
Come on Beeston he only tested positive for one fight. He still achieved hell of alot probaly roid free.
I agree with you. My point was that Roy is Roy with or without steroids. It's my opinion that Holyfield did some shady stuff after the alleged "heart attack" but does that mean Holyfield is not the great fighter/warrior that we have him down as? off course not.
Perhaps he did. Still a cheat. Yeah, Roy is Roy, but it does cheapen his achievements somewhat if he was caught taking any form of PEDS. I've never given Holyfield much thought, given that he never tested positive (to my mind :think) I'm happy to rate him as I would in any case. It's much easier to be a warrior when you're on PEDs and the other bloke is clean, after all. All sports should have mandatory drug testing, if the standards decline as a result, so be it.
To be honest, it's a controversial opinion, but I tire of all the anti-steroid talk. I watch boxing strictly for entertainment, like everything else. Sure, I love the sport and the science, but at the end of the day, I want to be entertained. While it's sad and disheartening if a fighter is on something, should I really care what's floating through his body, and people act like it adds another 50% to their ability? I think it's all overrated bull**** and as long as I see a fight, I really don't care. As long as I see a left hook connect, I'm a happy guy. And on the subject of Roy Jones, maybe he had one fight where he used the roids, possibly to bulk up, but if you're using that to take away from this guy's entire legacy or near enough, you're an idiot. Infact, you do that with anyone, even Mosley and Margarito it's just silly. It's a combat sport, it happens all the time, I'm paying to see an exciting fight, and if the fighter pays the price for getting caught, what the **** do I have to whine about unless he seriously injures his opponent? Shoulda woulda coulda.
Boy if that ever summed up why Jones is such a disappointment. He hurts Tarver early and ****ing showboats instead of going after his man. Why? Because he was scared of what was coming back. He REALLY hurts him with bodyshots, has him reeling against the ropes and he backs off. He backs off. Why? because he was near shot to **** by that stage and couldn't maintain an offensive. He would sit on the ropes, almost incapable of turning his opponent, choosing to cover up instead - even at his best. He was just so fundamentally flawed it's unreal the praise he gets. Yes, his athleticism was awesome, but he wasn't unbeatable despite what people now make out. He got knocked down heavily against Lou Del Valle and looked ****ing dreadful in the first Griffin fight.
I like Roy, of course I do, but to be honest all that messing around sometimes used to not really do it for me. I mean, sure he's looking great, but sometimes in his fights the crowd would go totally wild, when in reality he's not really landing or doing too much. All that crazy cheering, when in effect not really landing that much, was bound to sway judges. Still, that's being over critical, a great fighter no doubt, as we all more than know. Personally, as a fighter, I prefer Floyd though... *ducks for cover*
You never really see Floyd just sitting back admiring his work, or hot-dogging when he can be landing. He waits because he gets the perfect opening and, when he puts punches together, he is pretty damn awesome. Roy... I just don't see the fuss. He often made for boring fights and failed to deliver. There were so few guys that could have stayed with him, he was so fast and hit so hard for the weight. But he was reluctant to ever test himself or go up the gears.
