Now I think Ali was shot and no one here rates the win. But I remember watching an Burt Sugar list his top20 HWs with Holmes with him. He didn't have Holmes in the top 10 and Holmes kept saying, 'Not in the top10, I was the only one to dominate and stop Ali'. That was his proudest claim, not the countless defenses but the Ali win.

Thoughts and what was Ali seen as coming into the fight?

    ...Holy ****.

I've seen interviews and press conferences ahead of this fight and Ali was embarrassing himself. Stuttering, clearly was a shadow of a once great fighter. I'd sooner erase this fight from existence than discuss the possibility of it being credible.

If not for the Thyrolar it would be a bit impressive with Holmes dominating him like that and stopping him. He had a credible showing against Spinks before that and even showed some competetiveness against Berbick afterwards.

But seeing he was not only shot but also ****ed up on Thyrolar...

After watching Berbick (when he was 20 pounds heavier than for Holmes), it should be crystal clear to all how badly Ali's Thyrolar overdose screwed him up against Holmes. Muhammad would have been dominated anyway, but he was in such good shape for Holmes that I have no doubt whatsoever he'd have gone the distance without difficulty, and probably not even look as though he'd been in a fight at the end. Thyrolar is a horrendous drug to OD on.

I went to see this on closed circuit TV, saddest night of my boxing life, with hindsight Ali was totally shot .
Holmes is in my top 7.

give Holmes an Ali from anytime and i give him a better than average chance of winning. Larry is the most underrated champ of all time.

Holmes, even more than Norton would have been wolfbane to Ali.

Holmes is fast replacing Duran as ESB classic's poster boy. There comes a point when 90% of posts need to stop calling him underrated, whilst at the same time all rating him a top 4 ATG HW and H2H equal of Ali. Who started this off? I know it had to be someone considered credible? Who's the credible Holmes fan?

I witnessed the beginning of the up and coming Hopkins hype boom the other day. McGrain said some **** about him being a top 3 H2H at MW and people have been on his balls since then. Maybe i just look into things too much though

The pictures of Ali going into the Holmes bout were suprising, not because of his weight loss but because of his loss of muscle definition. That was a red light for me. What was missed by almost everyone who watched the bout is it showed clearly why Holmes never would have beaten a still able to fight Ali-as feebly slow as Muhammad was throughout the entire bout each time he moved and jabbed Larry,,,,did nothing but follow. Not once when Ali moved did Larry throw a punch, it was his biggest weakness and one that would have allowed Ali to comfortably outpointed him anytime in his career through the last Frazier bout.

Ali had nothing in there but I guess it had to be done, if not for anything else but the purpose of Holmes winning the linear heavyweight title in the ring.

Well there was hardly anyone else on the top 20 list Holmes could point to. By contrast Ali had multiple victims on there.

I'm a Holmes fan but I have to disagree, I think Holmes beats any version of Ali after Manila but that's about it, he certainly doesn't beat Ali at any point before that.

Larry doesn't deserve credit for beating shot to **** Ali in 1980, but he does deserve credit for the humane way he did it though. If Ali had been in there with someone like Tyson he'd most likely have been killed in the ring.
