No..... Ribalta always did enough to make the fight look good, but he was always a point or two behind, as well.... WORD! patsch MR.BILL:rasta
But back in the mid to late 80s when Jose Ribalta still had a future in boxing, he was a bean-pole at 6' 6" tall and 211 pounds for Tyson in '86..... Later on, Ribalta began slacking off on the diet and roadwork and was fighting in the high 220s and 230s at times..... Today, Christ, Ribalta is prolly 270 + pounds...... Who knows? MR.BILL
Actually, Jose keeps himself in better shape than most current heavyweights. He is still very active in the gym.
In a way, I see some 'Ribalta' in Tony Thompson... I'm not sure why, but I do... I see a tall, decent boxer who has some bad luck in big fights... That was Jose Ribalta and now its Thompson... BUT! Even though Thompson is closing in on age 40, he's still a solid pretender here in 2010, where as Ribalta was a gatekeeper / name by 40... Peace... MR.BILL
Jesus! I am pretty sure I remember that! I remember the local radio station making fun of the ad they had Cooper make...you couldn't really understand Cooper...instead of sounding like "Smokin", it sounds like something else. Don't remember the details. Or it could have been "Smokin Butt Cooper"....? Always thought his opponent was a local Island tough guy who was planned to be showcased against an aging veteran. I remember thinking "never have your first step-up vs a power puncher!" ha. Never knew it was some UK bareknuckled "champion". Wander what brought it all to small-town Nanaimo??? Thanks for the vid. Bert just fought again a couple months ago??? Anyways...back to Ribalta
i like him cos he proved just how beatable teh 'invincible' Prime Tyson was, by making him miss a lot of punches And look messy. I bet Douglas watched this fight before he whupped Tyson in Tokeyo.
Up until Jose fought Tyson everyone would feel Tysons power and either get knocked out or fold-Jose did neither and was the only boxer I saw at that time fight back and try to WIN against Tyson. He made Mike work for that win thats for sure and he never stopped trying-even when he got dropped HARD he got back up ready to fight-how many boxers who fought Tyson in his PRIME can even make that claim?
