How does everyone rate him? My personal opinion is that he is already right up there, close to p4p skill wise and if he beats Darchinyan and another very good fighter could be considered for the list.
He used to be my fav prospect... i always thought he has the potential to be the next JMM. Unfortunately he has no pop in his punches and he left nacho which is a big mistake.
He really did deserve the win over yhonny Perez, but he does need some power in his punches. Still, I think some better defense will take him a long way. He punches hard enough to keep fighters humble, but with better footwork and defense he can avoid big punches from the likes of Darchinyan.
Why do people always base how good fighters are, on how much power they have? If thats the case than Edison Miranda is the best fighter in boxing. And Muhammad Ali is the worst fighter ever. Since he never really was a power puncher. And about Nacho, Rafael Marquez left him also. So what? Nacho's problem is that he's always been a horrible manager. He's a great trainer but he picks horrible fights. Like when he refused the immediate rematch with Pacquiao and JMM. Yeah Marquez got a rematch with Pac anyway. But it shouldn't have taken that long. And Marquez lost some good fighting years because of it.
I made a good top 40 pfp list and a bunch of crybabys just bitched about it, instead of posting their own list. Actually anyones list could be picked apart but i thought mine was damn good Even though Boxings top 10 is kind of weak today, its suprisingly deep if you do a top 40 pfp list, i actually had to leave some good fighters off.
I seen that thread it was a good list maybe a bit too Mexican biased but not that bad at all but I still think your a numbskull for picking Brandon Rios as one of you're top 5 fighters closes to being an atg in that one other thread.
No way was it too Mexican:nono There wasnt one Mexican i picked that didnt deserve to be there. I almost always root for the Mexican or Mex/Amer. Although when it comes to rankings im not biased at all:nono I might be jumping the gun on RIos but he looks like the goods to me, and from what i recall on that thread he was the last guy i picked other than 3 or 4 guys its too early to tell,so actually i dont think he was a bad pick. Who would you rather have me pick Bernabe Concepcion
I picked him to beat Perez later in rounds. But was surprised he was on his bicycle early. You gotta do whatever it takes to win.I don't think he's atg material but will be a good champion.
I thought Perez was going to put the hurting on him, but boy was I wrong. He really won me over and I honestly thought Mares won the fight easily...robbery is quite an appropriate term in my opinion, but I'm not going to cry about it.
The tournament is his to lose though it's not that he's facing just OK guys, he's facing the BW elite. Vic however is not a legit 118er and is showing his age (but so far very dominant vs. Mexican styled fighters) and Perez (who'll beat Agbeko again) IMO already lost to Mares. That was quality experience for to kid and I think he's going all the way with hard earned decisions.
The Perez decision was exactly fair. I scored it exactly the same as the judges, and have been over this with people many times. Most people who claim Mares got robbed only had him winning by one point - and that's because they gave him the 9th round. Perez won more of the 9th round in terms of overall time, but Mares stole it on a lot of people's cards with a strong last minute. Discriminating judges such as myself don't allow rounds to be stolen in so short a time unless it's a very dominant minute. Change that Mares round 9 to a Perez round (as it ought to be) on the scorecards of 90% of the people crying robbery - and you have a draw...the same as two judges and myself had it. That said, Mares is a very good fighter (as is Perez). I expect them to meet again in the tournament finals (meaning Perez will again beat Agbeko, and Mares will beat Darchinyan). Then hopefully we will have a conclusive winner between the two and people can stop whining about a PERFECTLY SCORED DRAW. :deal
