Who had the best chance of beating Joe Louis ?

Ali and Foreman are two offhand I can think of.

I also wonder how Marciano would've done against a younger version of JL.

 

Now, I love old Joe but he didn't like it to the body. And there's only one body punching HW champ with the guile to break Louis down and the durability to stay in the pocket and survive long enough to do it. And we all know who that man is. Even the anti-Russite MRBILL knows it, in his heart of hearts.

I'd have thought that a good, tall fighter that uses his jab and range well could give Louis problems (Ali, Holmes, maybe Lewis if he stayed off the ropes)

I can't see too many HW's around his size giving him problems.

The big guys he was able to catch and kill. The small, clever, intelligent boxers give him the most fits every time.

So Gene Tunney. Ali too, just on sheer speed and strength of chin.

Tough fight for ol' Dempster. The size difference and Dempsey's weakness to a good left and counterpunching would seal his fate imo... Dempsey was pretty durable and amazing at recovering but Louis has the speed of hand and reflexes to land on him with impunity. He COULD bang Louis out though, who's been dropped from less concussive punchers.

bigger than Louis in the upper body.Chest, shoulders and deltoids..but as was described by many contemporaries,Dempsey had thinner thighs and was smaller around the waist, thus accounting for his weighing less than Louis...But from the waist up,Dempsey was a bigger man...He was
described as amazingly strong, thus accounting for his infighting prowess.Jach had shovel hands and huge deltoids...weight is deceiving...

joe must be the most economical puncher of all time and rarely wasted a punch.

 

I thought he was 185 and some change at toledo and then heavier later on? I could be wrong, though? Louis about 207 at his best?
