Gerry Penalosa: "He'll turn him into a punching bag"

Gerry Penalosa, one of the greatest fighters the Philippines has ever produced, and one of my personal favorites, has weighed-in on the upcoming match-up between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.

“It’s Manny’s time. He’s the world number #1 pound-for-pound fighter. Nobody can beat him in his division. The key is his quickness. I don’t think Margarito can touch him. He’s too slow for Manny. I’m not worried about his height. Manny has beaten fighters who were taller than him, like Oscar De La Hoya. Manny will turn Margarito into a punching bag.”

Juan Manuel Lopez is now fighting at ****ing Featherweight. No wonder he got dominated, Gerry ain't even really a legitimate Bantamweight!

He came out of that fight elevated, how many fighters would have took that beating and still come back with the odd good shot? Penalosa is a credit to the sport.

 

Gerry could have probably worded his answer better, but I don't think he was being intentionally disrespectful, he just thinks it's a stylistic mismatch.

Penalosa only played the role as punching bag when he was outgunned in every conceivable way, and even then he fought back and never yielded.

 

As I say, I don't think he was being intentionally disrespectful. Gerry hasn't had a history of trash talking fighters, he just tends to think Manny's speed will be the determining factor in this particular match-up.

 

He's probably right though isn't he? Margarito will most likely assume the role as punching bag, similarly to how did against Shane Mosley. Unfortunately for Margarito, he won't have the same acceptable excuses Gerry had for his fight with Juan Manuel Lopez. Y'know, being past prime, fighting a young up and comer who had sparked out the majority of his competition, and who is now operating at 126lbs. All these things.

I do give Margarito more chance than most, though.
