Joe Calzaghe, overrated?

absolutely he was played by warren but why feel sorry for him?

nobody felt sorry for ricky hatton (until now maybe) because he took his life into his own hands. calzaghe consciously let warren pull the strings all along and often referred to himself as a "business man" as an excuse for doing exactly what hatton did - make a name for himself in the states and find out how good he was.

 

He had awesome stamina, good to great chin and amazing athletic abilities. he trained like an animal for his fights and was smart about it too. Knew he was a big Super Middleweight and trained to stay at the weight.
not weight training to add heavy muscle.
There some of the things i actually really like about Joe Calzaghe as i dont want anyone to think Im a hater as i have been consistantly called before despite following his career since he beat Eubank

 

also when Clinton Woods was getting ready to fight Jones in the US, Calzaghe was getting ready to fight Brian Magee in belfast

 

no, what you say is true.

calzaghe was always in terrific shape for his fights and he didn't bulk up at all. he didn't need to.

but you implied warren held him back when joe was happy with the arrangement. that's why i used the hatton example.

i'm not faulting calzaghe as a fighter, his discipline in training or his skill - but his career path is a bad B-grade movie, and that's the reason why he'll never be remembered alongside great fighters.

Ilive in northern ireland so i get british tv and you know yourself how pathetic the boxing coverage is over her.even if you find a fight to watch its normally on at 5 in the morn.

my point is i really have followed the guys whole career and up until he fought lacy if you had called him a future atg people would have died laughing.

I think Joe Calzaghe was a ****ing good fighter but he is over ated because of his record and the ten years in the wilderness fighting bums.
Id beat everything i own that if he had of left Warren earlier he would have been legendary

Roy Jones in his prime went through 1,000 Calzaghes with ease. Calz woulda been destroyed by a prime James Toney.
