I like Jeffries, Louis, Dempsey, but in my opinion at his peak, Mike Tyson was the most impressive HW..

Jeffries in his prime was deemed more unbeatable than any other Champion in history IMO.

You seen any footage? If so, produce it here, I'm intrigued by this destroyer.

The Dempsey of Toledo was the greatest heavyweight of alltime...A lithe panther, bobbing and weaving, chin tucked in his shoulder, with a great left hook and
right cross...The best til he went Hollywood...

    Check yourself on Youtube.

I think maybe Sullivan, Louis or Dempsey could also maybe put in a claim.

    Why shouldn't he be?

Going by the opinions of the press and the public at the time, no Champion was deemed more unbeatable at their peak.

If we are purely going on the consensus opinion of the press and public at the time then Jeffries should be in the running, as the thread started did not specify any criteria.

Do you think any other Champion would have been favoured so heavily to defeat one of the Greatest champions ever, after a long lay off? The answer is simply no! Surely this represents something, OK it may be due to racial tensions and prejudice but Jeffries must have been deemed at least fairly good in his prime to achieve such acclaim, does he not?

It would have been similar for Jack Johnson to have came out of retirement and been made a favourite over Joe Louis. Could you possibly see that happening?

So the 'Greatest Heavyweight Of All Time At Their Peak' according to, and taking into account of, press and public opinion of their own time is James J Jeffries.

Anyway, I would actually say it is probably Muhammed Ali, but it is nowhere near as straight forward as you think it is. So I stand by my original question of 'Why not Jeffries?'

I like how you included Max Schmeling in there even so not even myself thinks he deserves to be there. However, my answer is Joe Louis.

Well, what does it say that they were dead wrong then? A case of bad luck, or perhaps that legend had a way of getting in the way of facts before there were plentiful of footage to judge from?

1 vote for Tyson, this is where he might deserve some nominations.

    Speed AND punching power kills.
The Great Jack Dempsey of 1918-1919 takes it.
