i thought at times he looked quite ragged a bit sloppy and a bit open, some like rios IMO, would have the time of his life with him, And i think tonight confirmed that Ortiz would spark him out early he better stay at Lightweight i wasnt all that impressed by his performance. I mean if this is what happens when your fighting a ukranian who was beat twice by an ex-kickboxer imagine the consequences when he fights a fridge level contender.
He really shouldn't take the Ortiz fight. Ortiz is a big strong guy at 140, with heavy quick hands. Murray should stay at 135, forget about chasing Khan and do his own thing.
The jump up in class for a fighter of his style from Euro to world is always the toughest one. To be fair though Murray has never looked tired or hurt in the ring to me but was getting easily outboxed by McAlister before Murrays work caught up with him. Ortiz is a bad match up for him, same with Rios.
Murray has absolutely no head movement and he walks in straight lines. His power isn't impressive either--someone who was a world class talent and faced the guys Murray has faced would have a KO ratio of 70-80 %. He should stay away from Rios, Ortiz, and Katsidis. Soto would be a better plan for him. And he should never even think of moving up to a loaded 140.
For Murray against top level 135 or 140 see Mitchell v Katsidis. He needs to pick his next few opponents carefully and not be used by Golden Boy just as he a name in the UK.
On paper Ortiz is not a good fight for him, but let me tell you there are certain intangibles that make that fight interesting IMO.
My thoughts as well. This should be the only fight that both Murray and Hennessy should be thinking about at the moment. Soto is a big fight worth a lot of money and exposure and Murray has a chance of performing well and grabbing a title. If Murray won then it would set-up some megafights for him as well. Hopefully common sense prevails.
Slips right. I mean Maidana fight was in Ortiz hands but he wilted mentally. I mean Maidana wasn't landing brilliant shots really. He landed hard shots and hurtful ones and he got a swelled up eye but he bottled it and opted out. Murray if he can get close and lay on Ortiz's chest against the ropes and snuggle real close to Ortiz and put his shots together i can see it being a good fight. Soto is a dodgy one as well a real classy operator when he can be bothered, big waste of talent at the minute imo. Just can't keep himself mentally there for the full 12. If he has one of his off nights which he has been doing for a while Murray could really get into him.
Have you seen that fight? Mcallister outboxed him for a round and a half. Once Murray had the distance down he really didn't struggle except when Mcallister ran away. There was a reason Mcallister slowed down and it was Murray's pressure.
We know Ortiz is good when the opponent doesn't pose him trouble. The only time we've seen him face adversity, he couldn't handle it. I can't see that changing, so I agree with you, Slip.
Why do you guys think he'd do well against Soto?:think Soto does everything Murray does, only about three times better. Soto may have got bored a bit lately with his comp (which has still been better than Murray's opponents), but when someone starts punching him back he's gonna wreck the upstart, brutalize the guy for daring to think he can beat him. Soto certainly looks that way at the moment - not a guy whose skills are eroding, but a guy who doesn't have a challenge. If someone steps up to the plate, Katsidis or Murray, he's gonna wreck them. That's his way, unless the opponent is too slick (like Guzman was - probably Joan's best performance).
Yes I'm almost sure a lot of people on here had given McAlister his fair share of the rounds early or so because Murray couldn't catch him. Like i said the bodywork and pressure that Murray brings really slowed him down and McAlister started showboating for some reason. A good quality boxer i think would frustrate Murray really bad and take him apart.
