I was watching Dinner with the Champions... and Ali starts going on a rant: "I was the greatest of all times, I would have wooped Louis, Johnson, Marciano, everyone". Then Holmes went "No, I am the greatest. I too would have beaten Frazier, Johnson Marciano Louis". But then Holmes said "The only one boxer, who would truly give me trouble was Jack Johnson"
1. Ali 2. Tyson 3. Frazier 4. Lewis 5. Louis 6. Liston I definitely take peak Ali, but the rest Holmes could well beat.
The most likely candidate is one who could neutralize his jab, and apply intelligent pressure. Louis, Lewis, and Tyson would have been a handful for him. Ali at his best might have beat him, but it would have been a different kind of fight entirely.
Johnson is his idol. Between rounds of his matches, you can hear his corner men calling him "Big Jack," a nickname in reference to Lil' Artha' which pleased him. Like Johnson, Larry's defensive competence allowed to compete to a much more advanced age than Louis and Ali could have ever dreamed of. (Imagine Louis still competing in 1966, or Ali in 1994.)
I have no idea. The guy just kept getting up. Prime Ali vs. Prime Holmes would certainly be an unusual fight.
That signature is ridiculous, Boxed Ears. You and John Garfield should team up on a boxing drama/comedy film about the great one.
Most of the names with the best chance have been mentioned..a dark horse that I always thought would give an interesting fight to Holmes and possibly beat him is Max Schmeling! I don't know that Max would beat him, but think he would present a tough puzzle for Holmes to figure out.
Loses to: Ali Louis Foreman Lewis 50-50 Marciano Liston Frazier Tyson Beats the rest (from the Louis era on).
