Yeah there's pretty much no evidence of that, it was discussed here a bit back as there was a article written about it.

Good little find those videos, cheers for posting :good

Had a look now I'm back at home Dempsey footage was good clear stuff - although already have that clear version on DVD anyway but it is great - loved seeing the short clip of Jeffries and Corbett and the one of Baer pulling the bus  what a nutter

Wow what great quality. Dempsey is like a tiger, and Williard actually looks more competent on the inside than I thought with those short shots. Oh man what a left hook... my freaking jaw dropped. Dempsey is very deceptive and eluding. I like how they broke up. It's like fighters these days need a ref to break up every clinch. Williard just puts up his arms and there is almost a brief peaceable agree for Dempsey to back off. They did it a hell of a lot more back in those days. Sure, they clinched, but they didn't hold on for dear life. Charles v Marciano I had some clinches but the ref never needed to break them up.

Here's a link to a site with many bits of news reel archive footage - basically just put in the name of whatever fighter you're looking for stuff on and see what it comes up with - there's a fair bit of Dempsey on their - lots of bits of training and sparring footage I haven't ever seen anywhere else - take a look

Tex Ricard (who was also the promoter of course) was the ref...I'm sure he was calling for the break...but your right...they did break without needing to be wrestled....still I don't know how smart it was of willard to step back with his arms out like that (I do sometimes see fighters do that...and I always think "protect yourself at all times...")

Definitely, but at the same time it's seems good how fighters break a little quicker. Now fighters will just hold on until a ref FORCES them off each other. And that can be excessive and really hurting the flow of a fight.
