Very good or great? Volume 3: Genaro Hernandez

He was very very very good. Almost great. Some of his losses hurt his ranking, but he is such a nice person and his boxing skills are so sound. I love his boxing. I use to tell a guy I trained to imitate Genaro Hernandez. He was so economical with his punches and movement. No wasting of anything. Great guy and I hope he is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

 

It's why I hope someone offsets the rest of us and gives him at least one great vote and then berates us all for not agreeing. It would make me feel better.

 

Oh hell, I was the one who voted "great". In my mind, he was at least as good as someone like Escalera and Serrano, and is well worth considering for induction into the IBHOF.

Besides, we can crap all over his victory over Nelson as much as we want, but Azumah had still looked pretty damned good in defeating Leija a few months earlier, so he still had a bit left over in the tank. And the way Genero defeated The professor (continuing on after getting nailed with a late shot), is a pretty notable feat unto itself.

So, the great vote wasn't completely without merit, imo.

 

Mayweather looked as good in that fight as he did in the majority of his defenses at the weight, in my opinion, and a lot better than he did the majority of the time at higher weights. I don't think the film justifies the notion that he was "very very green" at all.

Very good. I have all the time for Genaro Hernandez. Great technician, entertaining fighter and a good rep for LA fighters.

GH V Mayweather is up there with favourite Mayweather fights. Probably one of Mayweathers most switched on fights aswell. Mayweather wasn't green in that fight.

Calling him merely "good" and bilking him out of the "very" is as wrong as calling him "great".

 

Chicanito had very well rounded boxing skills. He had very good boxing skill, was quick, fast, and could manuever the ring exellent.

The one aspect in his game that lacked was his punching power. His hands were just too fragile and I think he was lacking in that to list him comfortably as a very good champion.

As it is however, I think he just squeeks in the "very good" list with the style and grace he exhibited in the ring.

I will never forget the class Chicanito exhibited after beating a well past prime Azumah Nelson and taking his WBC title......
Chicanito strapped his new won belt around Nelson's waist and insisted "The Proffesor" climb down the ring ropes with it.....
We may not rate him as a "great" fighter, but I think we can all agree that Genaro had a quality that was more important than that, he was and continues to be a "great" human being.

I think the defenses and the underrated Nelson win are enough of a case to call him great. Not an all-time great, but a little notch above very good. I think there are a lot of very good fighters that couldn't manage what he accomplished. Since ODLH was a beast that he fought outside his weight class, look at how long it took somebody to stop his dominance at 130 and only once, to a guy who still hasn't lost, going up to a light middleweight title! He wasn't at his best by then either. Didn't he have health problems around that time as well too? And wasn't his nose already injured before ODLH at that? I'm not saying it changed the outcome, but it's noteworthy that he ran into these guys under those circumstances, isn't it?

Already leagues beyond most of the belt holders in the sport at the time, maybe. Zero shame in his loss to FMJ or ODLH.

 

Great. This man is a great superfeatherweight undoubtedly. Not in my top 50 p4p however.

 

he was very good and probably was great if you put him h2h against anyone at 130. He is similar to Norris in his ranking I think. He did beat Azumah when Azumah was still good enough. Fighting Delahoya and Mayweather when they were at their best will make anyone look bad. They were just a little quicker than he was. I saw him at the Forum on the undercard of Thomas Hearns vs. Kemper Morton in Feb. of 1991 when I lived in California, and I told my friend something about Genaro, and I didn't even know who he was yet. He was fighting and I loved his footwork and movement. I said he moves a little like Tommy Hearns, and has great reflexes and is economical.. He stood out just from watching him fight on the undercard. Fighting different guys and not fighting the elite guys when they were young like Oscar and Floyd might have propelled him to greatness.

 

I have thought about it and yes I think he was.. like I said above.
