Eusebio Pedroza had some of the faster hands in the history of the featheweight division, but that doesn't get talked about that much.

Saoul Mamby's handspeed was pretty impressive when he was at his best.

Revisionist history slowed Arguello's hand speed way down! He wasn't the fastest guy around, but now days some people talk like he was slow as mud.

This is specifically about underrated hand speed, and nobody who I read about was more frequently described as having underrated hand speed during his prime in print than Earnie Shavers.

Saoul Mamby's hand speed at 34 was identified as the specific difference in his title defense against Watkins. That match was fought primarily on the inside, where Saoul was able to land two, three punches or more, to every one of Termite's. Later on, Mamby's hand speed had indeed diminished when Costello beat him conclusively.

Arguello very definitely belongs in this discussion. Immediately after he turned back Busceme, Bubba was asked if there was any difference between what he expected of Alexis beforehand, and what he actually discovered. Busceme replied that the one surprise was that Arguello was "quicker" that he expected. At this time, Alexis was a full blown lightweight, and two months short of turning 30. Four years earlier, in his only defeat between Marcel and Pryor I, Arguello was indeed able to match hand speed with the super quick Vilomar Fernandez. Vilomar's foot speed, chin, defensive skills, and the fact of a ten round limit, carried him to the MD victory, not any lack of hand speed on the part of Alexis.

Marciano has always been credited for fine hand speed by aficionados familiar with what he did to Rex Layne and Kid Matthews.

Duran is massively under-rated for speed of all types, including hand.

Not really under-rated, but turn-of-the-millennium Mosley was pure greased lightning, which a particularly fast jab.

OTOH, we know he was on EPO at around that time, which may have helped.

In Sports Illustrated's July 2, 1979 cover story article concerning Duran-Palomino, El Cholo performance was lucidly described thus by Pat Putnam: "battered him with punches thrown at blinding speed." Paragraph six, sentence five:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1095108/index.htm

With mainstream coverage like this at a time when boxing's popularity was at a peak, it's staggering that prime Duran's reputation for hand speed ever diminished.

Which reflects the fact that Duran was one of the greatest fighters of all time as opposed to the illusion that he is over-rated.

Nah, this must be a joke. Duran wasn't given the advantage in hand-speed? Surely?
