Are there any fighters in your time exploring classic boxing that you tried to like, tried to be a fan of, but just couldn't for whatever reason? Somebody maybe whose style you typically appreciate, or fought in an interesting era or had a bunch of good fights, but who still leaves you cold?

For me, it's Marciano. In my early days of finding out about this stuff and reading about and finally seeing some of the greats through time, his name, along with Ali and of course Louis and the Sugar Rays, stand atop the mountain in terms of general public appeal. There certainly is no dearth of writing about them, and their fights litter youtube.

For some reason, I just couldn't jump on the bandwagon and I find that odd. There are several reasons to be a fan; exciting style? Check. Good work ethic? Check. Great, intriguing fights? Check. There's no reason I shouldn't be a fan, he meets all of my criteria. Still, it eludes me.

Perhaps part of it is that he's too standard a choice. Just about everyone from a certain generation remembers him fondly, and he is in his own way iconic to them, and hence America. Therefore, I gotta go with another choice. Maybe that's it.

Then again, I AM a fan of Joe Louis. Hell, I don't know.

    What are your choices?

Sugar Ray Robinson. Yep, I said it. I don't like him.

I tried to like him, but just couldn't and still can't. He was obviously an ATG and all, but what I think I dislike about him is all of the praise he gets in every single department. It is very rare to see a thread asking who did whatever the best and not see Robinson at least get an honorable mention, no matter what the category. This makes me dislike him a bit, it also doesn't help that he was a terrible person who was very cocky and enjoyed beating on his wife inbetween sleeping with other women.

I agree with you. Frankly, perfection is boring. Not the least bit sarcastic when I say that, either, it IS boring. For me there needs to be some flaw, something that makes them fallible in the ring. Having to overcome is always a better story.

Plus, the guy was an utter ***** worthy of respect only in the ring.

Emile Griffith. Fantastic boxer, and by all accounts a very nice guy, but when he was at his best, there was a...how should I put it...sameness...to each round that he fought that made it hard for me to watch a fight all the way through.

I could never like Lennox Lewis. I've never hated him and I've always thought that he was good but he just didn't have the excitement that other heavy weights in his era had.

SRR was a ***** outside the ring but I still respect him as a fighter and am a fan of the fighter. I still can't "pussyfoot" around the terrible things he did. Situations like this it's hard to support a fighter when they've done so much intentional wrong but I like to remember him as a fighter, not a person. As far as Qawi, he was a ***** too especially in the Holy-Qawi 1 postfight interview but I respect him as a fighter too. I heard he tries to help out the youth but I'm not sure that's true or not. If so, I can respect that though I still think he was a ***** regardless of the fact that I'm a fan of his. Love his work inside the ring though.

    Irony below this post lol

    Ali.

Go on, tar and feather me.

I respect his skills and concede that he can't be rated any lower than #3 at HW all-time (although parts of me feel the need to dig in their heels, cross their arms, and stick out their tongues when people try to claim that he's clearly over Holmes [h2h] or Louis [period] without any room for debate). I just don't really care for his style (or personality), and always find myself irrationally rooting against him when watching many of his big wins despite knowing the outcome. The Frazier rubber-match especially stings. I also would have liked for him to meet with Big George somewhere other than Zaire. Sour grapes, I know.

He's undeniably great, and any self-respecting fan/historian is obligated to see as much of his filmed career as possible along with those of the other greats, but I don't have the crush on him that many here do. :conf

Felt the same way 'bout Griffith, D. Every round was on a loop. My eyes glazed over...Maybe it's jealousy that I didn't look like him in trunks.

SRR wasn't perfect, B. Perfection' s dull. Mayweather comes closer to being a snore. Sugar was a thrilling predator, an executioner always ready to pounce 'n tear prey to shreds. To see him LIVE, at his zenith, was BREATHTAKING!...almost enough to make one forgot what an insufferable dick he was outta the ring.

I'm not able to enjoy Duran as much as I would, maybe because he is this though mano a mano fighter, and always had that cold, intense look about him,
no flaws just like a character from some spaghetti western.

To me he is just to proud for his own good, but I still think he's a great boxer who challenged himself to the fullest.

It's probably too soon to call him a "classic" fighter, but Sweat Pea fights have me getting fidgety.

Hearing you on the Monzon call too techks. My appreciation for Monzon developed more when a good friend of Tony Mundine told me some of Tony's Monzon stories and i was able to develop a bit more appreciation for his unflappable approach.
