his head is enormous. is this why he was able to absorb so much punishment ?are fighters with big heads able to absorb more punishment? how many other champions can you name with big heads?
Battling Nelson's skull was MUCH THICKER than the average man"s head ,it has been reputed...He was able to absorb great punishment in long bouts, than any champ in history...
he absorbed a lot of punishment because he did not have any defensive skills,he threw wild haymakers and tired out easily, this enabled his opponents to throw and land punches at will:think
A comment by someone who has never seen LaMotta fight obviously. LaMotta was a master of the shoulder roll and of riding punches to lessen their impact. The idea that he tired easily is ludicrous. In his prime he was compared to Harry Greb for throwing huge volumes of punches. He also didnt throw haymakers but was more known for his bodypunching, being in my opinion one of the best bodypunchers of all time.
When I saw the thread title, I thought it was about Jake's psychological make-up. Now that would be a discussion!
I think head size or shape can suggest a good or bad chin. You look at Oscar, Mosley, maanny, etc and there are gigantic square shaped heads. Now look at someone like Amir Khan, he has a delicate shaped head. This isn't a rule in any way. Some guys have regular sized or shaped heads and have a fine chin. Robinson, marg, etc
it's an interesting subject. we always make fun of this guy in our camp for having such a big head. but in no way does it allow him to absorb more punishment on the cheeks or chin.
