So it turns out I've been boxing in the wrong stance this whole time.

So I've been boxing for 1 year in the southpaw stance, but I am right handed. I feel completely comfortable in this stance and my footwork and punches are looking good. Yesterday my trainer decided to do an experiment and put me into an orthodox stance, I started hitting the mitts and he and I noticed that my right hand sounds like a bomb. I do feel like I have more power in my orthodox stance, but it feels weird as ****. My footwork is not there, and it feels awkward to throw a jab.

I do plan on getting good with both stances, but idk if I should try to switch over to the orthodox stance which seems to give me more power, or to stay in more my more comfortable southpaw stance.

If I were you I'd learn to switch hit. An orthodox fighter with a good right hand is a great style to be able to morph into after already having the advantage of being a natural southpaw.

I'm actually right handed, my trainer is already trying to get me into a pirog style (less shuffling more switching)

this could be a good thing for you actually, it will confuse your opponents. my trainer is left-handed and fought mostly orthodow cos it deceives his opponents into thinking his left isn't as good, however you obviuosly have to have good left cos otherwise you could lose a lot of opportunities. also you should stick with what you are comfortable with, i've only been training six months and i couldnt imagine going orthodox (i am left-handed)

Im a right handed southpaw and love fighting like that as its a style of fighting people dont get trained to figth against but in theory i should fight orthodox but these guys are right try learning to switch your styles during a fight it will confuse the **** out the guy your fighting just make sure your not in range when you do it.

I don't get how people get confused when guys switch stance. It'll give you maybe one free shot due to the change of target but apart from that I don't even notice half the time.

It really is a strange thing. When I first started martial arts (Tae Kwon Do/Muay Thai) I naturally fought southpaw. My thinking was basically that my right is better than my left so I should lead with that. After a a few months my instructor started to force me to fight orthodox. To begin with it felt really strange and it totally threw me off my game, a month later it felt completely natural and southpaw felt really weird (clearly I am not born to be a switch hitter).

In my (limited) experience fighting southpaw gives you a lethal jab but a much weaker cross, orthodox is the reverse. Personally I prefer orthodox because of the extra power I get in the straight right but both have things to recommend them.

If you're changing stances after a year of training the main thing you will need to work on is your jab. Your left won't be used to that fast, whip-like action and it will take some practice. As a consolation try throwing a full power right cross the next time you are on the heavy bag. It will practically fly across the room! Enjoy.

i'm a convert southy also but to compensate I've been putting a lot of practice into my straight left. Feels more natural and I like the idea of a power jab really ****ing up their rhythm. I've been helping a friend of mine practice his striking and we both are trying to learn how to switch hit.

For whatever reason, I feel quicker in a southpaw stance than I do standing orthodox. Although technically I'm far better boxing orthodox and feel sharper, more powerful and can put my punches together better. Southpaw I basically become like the Pacquiao of old, all about concentrating on my speed and left hand. My right hand is basically non existent because I can't throw a proper right-hook as a southpaw to save my life.

I'd say give the orthodox stance a try, but if it feels weird, go back to southpaw. It's not worth sacrificing your footwork and such for a bit of extra power.

I'm orthodox and I do everything right handed. But my left hand is much more powerful and accurate than my right in boxing terms.
