I think both of these guys were great fighters albeit a tad overated (Qawi in general, Jones at LH). In addition to the great jab, I think Spinks earned Qawi's respect with the Jinx and left hook/uppercuts. Jones had faster hands and feet than Spinks and I think he'd be able to keep this at a comfortable range for the most part. I just see this as a good matchup for Roy.
Sometimes I see this as a good fight for Roy, as its hard to envision on paper a relatively one dimensional, slowish of feet fighter who is giving away a fair bit of height and reach troubling a freak of nature like RJJ. But the more I think about it the more I think it would be all sorts of hell for him..Just cause old Montell gave Roy actual, bonafide for real headaches in their first fight for some of the same reasons Qawi would be able to but he is all around a better fighter and may well have even greater success. Id still pick Roy...but if Mr Braxton had got a shot at him in the middle of his reign everyone would be talking about how the invincible Roy looked quite vincible. (yes thats a word apparently)
Jones continues to get overrated at Lt. Heavy. I'm not gonna say he couldn't beat Qawi, but I don't think I'd favor him. I don't think he had the discipline to consistently shut down Qawi's strengths like Spinks did, and the thought of a stoppage win in Roy's favor is nothing short of laughable, as is the mentioning of the Brannon fight as any kind of benchmark for this one. Gun to my head and I'll pick Qawi by mid rounds stoppage after cracking Roy with a big right hand and following up. It'd be a sight.
Nothing only it would be an offensive fight against a shorter opponent. Brannon was a respectable fighter. They showcased him a lot on Tuesday night fights. Never in the class of these two but an entertaining guy. Tried to look and fight like Holyfield.
roy would likely win a decision. He was very good at keeping guys at the end of his punches and keeping his opponents off balance. At 5'6 I think Qawi would have some sucess on the inside, but I think Roy would take no chance and keep it a boxing match by utilizing footwork and his jab. Qawi was very good at chopping guys down though so I wouldnt be surprised if there were some rocky moments for Jones though.
No no no...we need you to keep this board's Monzon obsession in check. Please stay, its just your so cryptic sometimes itry.
The more I think about it the more I favor Dwight. Roy didn't have the jab needed for a fighter like Qawi. He'd get pole-axed, eventually. If the odds were right I'd bet cash.
