Shozo Saijo is fighting here for the first time since lifting the WBA featherweight title in a wide decision versus Raul Rojas. A non-title affair and a homecoming fight (Shozo lifted the title in the States), Saijo is at his peak.

Flash Besande is nobody really, he'd already lost five times in spite of his inexperience, and would cram in another three losses in the next 12 months before retiring, but here he fights the fight of his life, his lurching, winging style causing all sorts of problems for the presumably over-confident champion.

The fight is an exciting and bizarre affair. Both men have excellent chins and neither man could punch worth a damn (they would finished with a combined 11 knockouts from around 68 combined fights) but here they belt each other form pillar to post right across the ring scoring multiple knockdowns apiece. A genuine thriller with protracted and furious exchanges and an electrifying grandstand finish.

That was some fight McGrain, thanks for posting. Interesting you note that neither had power, given their KO records. Besande looked like Rocky Balboa in there; I was thinking, "damn; power in BOTH hands" when he dropped Saijo in the seventh with a right hook after having had success earlier with the more typical southpaw left.

Given what you've said about how they typically fought, this is obviously one of those lightning in a bottle moments that neither would see again. Fantastic scrap.

It's properly crazy, isn't it? Besande shouldn't be in Saijo's class, the two have something like 4 ko losses between them in about 70 fights, and 11 KO's between them in about 70 fights...and yet, like you say, it's a bit like watching Shavers and Lyle.

Young Kyun Park famously seperated Esparragoza from his title, and would successfully defend this title 8 times, until he was finally separated from it by Rojas...but not here. This is the first fight between the two, and an inexperienced Rojas looks disturbed by Park's dirty, aggressive, furious pressure style rules the day. Even when tired, Park finds a way to work, and he puts the fight well beyond Rojas as early as the 7th.

Eloy Rojas would become Park's future nemesis, but likely needed the four years between their first and second fights to be made ready - his inexperience shows here, Park's rhythm breaking, mauling style clearly putting the first time title-tiltist off his stride.

The fight is a *******, if a little one-sided. Rojas refuses to give up inspite of the fact that he was trailing on the cards and this helps to make the fight a thrilling one, although his heart, grit and a late rally of sorts is not enough to save him. Rojas is repeatedly fouled though, hit behind the head, hit whilst down, hit after the break, butted, and the referee is terrible. When Rojas begins to respond in kind, holding, hitting and holding and hitting after the bell and break, he draws a warning from an absolutely pitiful referee (For holding), but at no time does the hapless Larry Rozadilla find a way to take a point from either, and arguably, another referee would have tossed Park out. Park's freedom to foul does lend support to his mauling style, and it also helped to throw Rojas off his gameplan

    My card:

    Park: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,10,12

    Rojas: 8,9,11

So allowing for the knockdown, I have it 117-110. The official cards were 118-113, 116-111 and 118-110

Park was a pretty poor champion.Rojas was about the only competent fighter he defended against and he lost the series to him.

He's definitely fun to watch though, even if you are rooting for the other fella.

Wasn't ZeffieTowers the same guy as Waynebedfre or whatever? His first account was suspended so he made the new one, now he has an even newer one imaginatively named ZeffieTowers2. He's sure to be suspended again any time now.

Uploading "copyrighted" boxing footage, most likely. That's what sucks about Youtube.
