Whether they resulted in a knockout or not.

I think enduring 100% flush, head snapping punches is underrated to some fans when it comes to discussing chins.

Sometimes hard to spot by the fan during high action, combination filled bouts. But, obviously there's a massive difference between a punch that lands flush compared to one that misses the sweet spot by an inch or two. Again, hard to spot at times, especially in the times before flashy, edited slow motion replays and montages.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of the hardest punches I can remember seeing among the several hundred bouts I've sat on my ass and viewed are counter hooks off the ropes.

Punch thrower relaxed, back against the ropes. The soon to be unconscious fighter pressing the action winding up with a right hook, or left hook. Punch whiffs, man on the ropes unwinds a absolutely hellacious punch traveling in the opposite direction, catching their man as he's missing that completely loaded up shot. Basically, catching a fighter as he's throwing a punch.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

David Kilgour was a fighter whom fought at and around the middleweight limit, eventually moving up to cruiserweight. He ended his career with only 17 fights, hardly a fighter whom many will remember.

He fought one of the Quarry brothers, Bobby at cruiserweight where Bobby had 30 pounds on him. He was on the end of a counter hook off the ropes from Bobby and it was one of the most brutal knockouts I've ever seen. There may as well been a man standing behind Kilgour with a gun against the back of his head. He was out when that hook landed.

The only time the ultra scrappy Rocky Lockridge was ever stopped was the result of a wound up hook from Juan LaPorte, again off the ropes.

Rocky went down like he had been struck dead by some higher power, if I'm remembering correctly his leg bent under him in a grotesque manner as well.

This was a young Lockridge as well, no shot fighter. He would go on to go 15 rounds with Eusebio Pedroza, 15 with a past prime Wilfredo Gomez in a fight many feel Lockridge deserved to win. 24 rounds against Tony Lopez, 12 against Julio Cesar Chavez.

Basically he rumbled with the best and was never stopped except for the punch that nearly decapitated him off the ropes from LaPorte.

And one more example, as they keep coming to me after I make previous posts.

Edwin Viruet had one of the finest chins of any fighter during the 70's. He absolutely enraged Roberto Duran and yet still managed to go a combined 25 rounds with him, a feat few managed during that time.

Edwin Rosario stopped him with a single counter hook off the ropes, a shot that saw Viruet go down like 10 pounds of **** in a 5 pound bag. Brutal.

The right hand that ultimately did LaMotta in against Ray Robinson.

    7:25

Looks better in slow motion or from the other camera angle, but you can still see LaMotta's head snap back from the force of the blow. I imagine it was on par with the right hand he KO'd Graziano with, except LaMotta had a chin of granite.

This one too - the one at the 1:22 point (and the point of Ruddock's chin) - how he got up from that I will never know???? This is one of my favourite heavyweight fights as well

A more modern one but this is a thunderous right hand from a huge puncher.

That might have been the hardest left hook ever landed..Consider this---
Jack Dempsey at about 185 pounds landed a perfect left hook on a
Jess Willard about 255-60 pounds jaw w'with such power that Willard who was NEVER dropped before, fell like a sack to the canvas...Willard though
past his peak was a massive strong chinned goliath...A writer[forgot his
name] has the film of Toledo at proper speed, and was awed by Dempsey's power against a 70 pound heavier Willard...
