i'm not saying anything crazy, i'm just saying that the only thing keeping america from being at the top of the heavyweight scene in the coming years is a very big thing indeed, and that's a shift in what is and is not a top sport and more importantly making boxing a sport worth venturing into. america's best athletes go mainly into basketball and american football, baseball, and so on, with boxing being at the very bottom.

what else explains how we've somehow forgotten 80+ years of sublime heavyweight boxing and everything that goes into becoming a champion, and decided to become fat bums? the only way to explain it is that our best athletes are being sucked into varsity sports and staying with them throughout their lives. this benefits them in the form of scholarships and lucrative professional athletic contracts.

before you disagree, take this into consideration. what sort of heavyweight would Lebron James be if he was reared in the sport of boxing from three years old, like he was with a basketball, with his never before seen speed, agility, footwork, explosiveness, and pretty good sports IQ? ron artest?.....DWIGHT HOWARD? Haha, might be getting a little crazy there, but who knows? I think you guys know what I mean anyway.

America won't be a consistent dominating face on the heavyweight scene until boxing once again becomes a feasible WAY OUT (of poverty, of mediocrity, idleness, etc) for big, young athletes who want to be champions in life. it's no secret that in the former soviet union, boxing is a legitimate path to stardom for that same type of young, impressionable athlete, and look how they've risen to the occasion.

America can do it, but it can only be done by making boxing a real way out again.

Agreed. Once they've mentally shat themselves, the U.S. can rightly reclaim the throne of the HW division.

fact is that these days where a fighter comes from has little to do with how successful he is. There are quality trainers everywhere and anyone can just hop on a plane and get the best sparring in the world.

that's true, case in point, wladimir klitschko and one of the world's best trainers, AMERICAN emanuel steward. and i'm sure mr. steward would jump at the opportunity to have trained someone with an athletic package of a lebron james from a young age as well. the fact is, those sorts of athletes are few and far between these days in america because of the allure of other sports.

from a strictly genetic standpoint, America doesn't produce better athletes than all the other countries. So even if the allure of other sports changes, America's dominance in boxing is anything but guaranteed.

Look at the lower divisions. Its not like elite 140-160lb athletes have tons of avenues in America.

Yet they are not dominating boxing.

Boxing is more globalized now than ever before, that's the main issue.

Canada's two best fighters are Romanian and Haitian.

possibly, but the term "rightly"? not sure if that's accurate. america's time on top has to be earned now, not given. at least in terms of heavyweights. let's see if it happens

what am I, adolf hitler? I never said anything close to that. let me reiterate what I said. I said, the top american athletes who COULD possibly be world class heavyweights, are world class basketball players american footballers, and baseball players. that's what I said.

Bit off topic but.......Being the Heavyweight Champ was like the greatest sporting prize in the world. What happened to that? I mean really, where did boxing lose this global recognition? Probably too many sanctioning bodies watering this **** down.

America needs to promote boxing more, America is the main stage for the sport and it needs to become glamorous again. Until that happens, everyone with an ounce of ability will just bat a ball and run around or stick pads on and run around or throw a ball through a hoop and make their cash that way.

those athetes in america do gain avenues once they establish a media personality that makes them a marketable fighter, just like anywhere else. boxing is more globalized? everything is more globalized. both canada and america are countries made up of immigrants. if the two were made up of natives, you'd be dealing with native americans, so what are you talking about? what does globalization have to do with it? honestly?

really good point. the heavyweight title, back in the 70s, was signal that you were baddest and best mother****er on the planet

now it means you'll get burger king endorsements in munich.
