Being European champion, automatically puts you in the governing bodies top 10, that in itself warrants all sorts of possibilities. Being European champion carries with it the credibility that you are a world class fighter, but we all know its up to the promoters to make the fights. Many, many Euro champs have jumped straight from Europe to the world. Why should it be any different for Mccloskey. And Khan didnt deserve his title chance considering he was nether British or European champ at lightweight or lightwelter. We all know Warren got him the title.
Are you listening to your logic. "He didnt deserve it, so McCloskey deserves it" Of course Warren got Khan the shot - because Khan earned shitloads of money and was a PPV star at the time. Is Paul in the top 10 of sanctioning organisation? Dont you think it might be good for Paul to fight someone in the world top 20 before having a go at a world title?
He's no 4 in the WBC. I couldn't care less whether or not he 'deserves' his shot or not and I hope we're not worried about the stick he might get on some forums if he does. I'd love to see him step up the competition and he HAS to mention a big name to in turn get his name in the papers. Watch tomorrow - his name will be linked with Amir Khan, who everyone knows, in the newspapers of Ireland. Sounds a bit better than McCloskey: Bring on Andriy Kotelnik! or worse Dudey: Bring on Souleymane M'baye Who cares what he deserves, he's a quality fighter and it's not such a stretch for him to want Khan. Still; won't happen Khan's simply too big a fish now
The only song ever mentioned in any boxing article i did was the rocky road to Dublin, when Pickering came into that song!!! Ill be getting blamed for Marty next!
Lads at least they are showing boxing regular. two more shows before xmas including Casey and Kiko.... By all accounts they havent big cash so they have to use staffers instead of specailists!
Aye I agree Johnny. Boxing's pretty much a specialist sport here and no way are they going to employ a specialist staff. Last night was an improvement and so-so is better than no-show
McCloskey should fight Tim Coleman. A recognised American who is very beatable but made a bigger statement than Dudey this weekend. I know Coleman used be trained by Lee Beard. Not sure if he still he is. I remember him being asked if , since he was training in europe would he fight european fighters and his response was something along the lines of "na theyre all bums" Let him try back up his words.
The Khan fight is totally unrealistic if we are being honest. I think McCloskey still has another gear in him yet and with a hard 6 week training camp at somewhere in the heat or at altitude and with some good sparring (no offence Messrs Murray and Haughian) he would improve another 10%. He will never change his style so there is the risk that he will get taken out by better fighters but his style also means that he softens his opponent up and finishes them off in mid-to-late rounds. Paul has been avoided for most of his career to be honest and lets not forget that he only got the Lynes fight because Barnes got injured and Paul was on the undercard. It wasn't his fault that M'Baye pulled out and that a limited Rasilla stepped in. He told me himself after the Lauri fight that he had been chasing M'Baye for months leading up to the Lauri fight and that M'Baye was ducking him- and then he moved to Welter and won that iterim title. The saying you can only beat whats put in front of you springs to mind. Paul has beaten everyone at a canter- except Lauri and Wright and on both occasions he couldn't see out of his right eye and had to box on the inside which we know doesn't suit him. Hopefully he gets out of that rematch with Lauri because at 31 he really does need to get a move on. Mabuza won that IBF title eliminator at the start of the year- surprisingly in my opinion so I would fancy Paul against him if that fight ever happened. Mabuza will proabaly end up fighting a yank though if its the IBF strap... Kotelnik is probably the best option in Europe. Well beaten against Khan alright but his stock must have risen since the Alexander "loss" so comparisons could definitley be drawn if Paul does fight him and does beat him
Any of these 4 next for McCloskey would be good 1> Malignaggi 2> Olusegen 3> Urango 4> Guzman If he can get past any of them then he can target Kotelink. If he had to get a title shot I think Alexander is the one he would have his best chance against.
Mccloskey would have a hard enough time of getting his hands on a title with the current depth of the division unless alexander is stripped of his.It seems unlikey but i wonder if Mccloskey would ever consider moving down to lightweight? The division isnt as deep there, and Mccloskey looks to have a bit of extra weight at lightwelter he could stand to lose 4 or 5 pounds id say
just back from letterkenny great night mcloskey was class taught finbar eade boxed very well as did fitzpatrick, pajo hammered a guy who done well to survive pajo won every round dropped the guy in the 2nd and made him touch down in the 4th yet ref Ervine scored the fight 59-54 he,s a joke seen mel crystal haveing words with him over score
Not sure how bothered Paul would be about Danny Boy- I just thought it weird since the tricolur was there. Is this to do with McCloskey being ex-british champ because Duddy always had Amhrán na bhFiann when he boxed over here? Minor detail anyway but I just think it seemed to flatten the atmosphere and was quite cringeworthy.
