About as much as Angelo Dundee ruined Leonard and Manny Steward has ruined Wlad.

I think without Cus was what lead to Tyson's downfall. Without Cus earlier I don't think Tyson would have made it to the level he did accomplish.

Cus may have been a father-figure to Tyson, but he wasn't his father. You can't blame him for treating Tyson as a fighter first and ward second. He wanted Tyson to be a great fighter, but he certainly couldn't control him completely. Also, he did instill in Mike what he needed to become a disciplined champion. THat he has problems in his personal live is well beyond D'amato's control. Even great parents have screwed up kids and Cus was not Mike's dad. He was his trainer.

Also, Tyson always ha problem in his personal life. A trainer can't control that. Mike remained a discplined fighter until Don King entered the picture. Kevin Rooney tried his best to try to keep Tyson under control, but he couldn't. Atlas was probably closer to Tyson than D'amato was because he was closer in age and was sort of like a big brother figure. And we saw what happened between them...Atlas threatened to kill him. No way could Tyson control himself. Like Larry Holmes famously said before their fight "If he do happen to win the fight, sometime down the road he's gonna destroy himself." He was right.

I'm not sure anybody could have changed Mike at that point. I think the effectiveness of Cus' influence is apparent by looking at both Mike's career and personal life before he died and looking at it after. Whatever squabbles Mike got involved in while training under Cus were nothing compared to what came later.

Cus was the best thing that ever happened to Mike. Mike went downhill once Cus died.

I guess you watched ESPN's 'Ringside - Best of Mike Tyson'..? In that show Teddy tried as hard as he could to not sound like a dick but still failed. Also some of his stories about Mike sounds bull**** to me..

Mike came from a life on the streets and Cus did the best he could. Has Cus and the team he left to take care of Tyson lived longer ... Don King would not have been able to exploit the situation.

No it actually came from an Evander Holyfield book.

In a nutshell, it seems Atlas led with a stick and D amato a carrot

I think Tyson would have benefitted more from the stick

I am also curious as to whether how much Cus's role in all this has been exaggerated - With his death he has now been elevated onto a pedestal and given mythical qualities - A nice little back story to overdub with meloncholy piano music for a non boxing friendly special on Tyson.
i think a lot of poetic licence is used on Cus D amato

Cus made Tyson who he is

    tyson owes everything to Cus

He gave him shelter, food, love and some of the best trainers in the world to make him the youngest heavyweigh champion of all time

    Your original statement is bulls**t
