Some people on here are clueless......Naz had 104 fights amateur and pro, he won 98 of them fights!!! As an amateur he was an England International, as a pro he won the European, IBF, WBC,WBO & IBO titles. You people are meant to know your boxing, yes Naz had a dig but a dig alone only get's you so far.....people say he had little boxing ability??? Well you people don't know ****....So what he got beat by an absolute legend in Barrera?? No shame in that at all.....Naz was good for boxing so stop the hating!!
You can also claim he sort of "unofficially" won the WBA title by default, as he beat their champion, Wilfredo Vazquez, who was stripped just before fighting Naz and never lost the title in the ring. Naz didn't win their title, but he beat their champion.
As mentioned above, Naz won European, WBO, IBF, WBC, IBO titles, beat the WBA champion, dominated the division for 5 years, was one of, if not the biggest box office attractions in our sport, travelled to America - and won - several times, yet he's still viewed as an underachiever who never really fulfilled his potential. Bizarrely, I agree, he didn't fulfill his potential. However that does not diminish the many things he DID achieve and just how talented he was. He achieved a great deal of things that many boxers can only ever dream of. Naz was a phenomenon in his day, something special that brought a whole load of new fans and interest to our sport. The excitement he generated stretched beyond just the die-hard boxing fans. I remember people would come up to me and talk about Naz all the time, many of whom wouldn't know a left hook from a fishing hook and had no other real interest in boxing, but Naz had them talking about him! He, along with Lennox Lewis, carried British boxing in the late 90's after the Bruno/Eubank/Benn/Collins era had faded out and before the real emergence of the Calzaghe/Hatton era.
Calzaghe Great fighter yes !!! acheived more than Naz yes , but wouldnt be Warrens first choice for his own most popular fighter he's ever worked with award now would he ??? Warren has said things like , i had Calzaghe a fight with James Toney , and Glen Johnson twice and he turned them both down , and Calzaghe very very nearly didnt take the Lacy fight , which was backed up by Joe's autobiography .
