I just read this on Facebook and thought it was funny and well worth sharing. A guy named Rick Glaser, who has worked closely with Don King in the past I believe, often poses Boxing questions on his wall to all of his followers. You always get loads of answers, and this time he was asking us about Teddy Atlas. Boxing fans, what's your opinion of trainer and ESPN announcer Teddy Atlas!!! Yours thoughts please. The first response that caught my attention was from Greg Haugen, probably most known for fighting the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker. This is what he had to say about it. He's an idiot never been a fighter but according to him he's the greatest trainer ever, just look at his face and you know he was a catcher. The opinions have generally been split down the middle. I quite like Teddy Atlas, and others have said that, but then another fighter, this time Dominick Guinn had something to say about it, too. **** teddy atlas biased *****,an if he doesn't like u r your trainer he will away b biased toward u,an I think he's a shitty trainer,""take that 2 the bank""" Rick He'd carry on... That's my opinion, everyone has there own opinion,I've delt with him and that's why my opinion is so nasty, sorry fb fans of teddy atlas, Then some random dude weighed-in on Guinn with this, @Dominick Maybe your a shitty fighter!! You ever look at it that way??? LMAO Guinn :yep Augutus has also said that "he talks too much". Opinions on Teddy Atlas?
Thats pretty funny really. There are two extremes to Atlas and rarely people in the middle. Boxers are often times the worst people to discredit trainers because of their experience with them. A lot of boxers dont like to be told what to do or have the discipline Atlas wanted his fighters to have. Atlas likes running a tight ship. He doesnt like premadonna fighters who have towel holders and radio operators. He used to make fun of Shannon Briggs while he was training him saying he was more like an actor than a fighter. Its his way or no way. That being said, he knows boxing, hes a big believer, as am I, on the psychological side of the sport, but he is a bit nuts. His instructions are too complex, and I believe he sometimes sabotages figthers mentally by his own lack of self confidence in them. He did it with Mike Grant and hes doing it now with Poventkin. Atlas is definitely a fighter at heart and has a very explosive short temper. Ive seen the guy crack a writer for asking him a derogatory question about Moorer at the Botha fight.
Atlas didnt have that much boxing experience. He started training fighters at a very young age, before he was 20 I think? He then moved to Catskill to work with Cus D'amato, and then parted ways because of what he thought was a lack of discipline on Tyson's part, and Tyson supposedly fondling one of his nieces.
From Wikapedia : Teddy Atlas trained as an amateur boxer briefly with This content is protected trainer Cus D'Amato, but he was forced to retire after suffering a back injury. Atlas became an assistant to D'Amato, and he occasionally helped in the training of protege This content is protected . His relationship with Tyson ended after Tyson at the age of 15 had been sexually inapproperiate with a 13 year old female relative of Atlas. Atlas put a .38 caliber handgun to Tysons ear and told him to never touch his family again or he would murder him
