How'd greats who burned the candle at both ends 'n in the middle do so well?

What different things did Pep tend to do in the gym training wise? What was he like, I'm sure we'd all love to hear the stories

 

'ppreciate the props, P. Willie's training regime was pulling pranks 'n non-stop jokes. But then he stepped in ring 'n the standup comic became Nijinsky.

Once outta the ring, he was 100% goombah.

What was Willie's realationship with Sandy Saddler like when they were off duty ??

 

i remember pep and saddler and zale and graziano sparring for old times sake in the 70's.
i don't think it was all that cordial

 

sugar ray robinson never trained seriously john? amazing that. great fighters like duran, louis, heck even a modern guy like roy jones train feverishly in the gym. then when you hear about pep, greb, srr not training all that regularly it sounds too hard to beleive. sure ti adds to their legend but the way ray fought in the ring, it just seems impossible that he didnt rain that way. still, it would be tough for someone who wasnt on ray or pep's level to understand.

 

Natural talent can take you a long way especcially if you craft comes very easy for you. Look at Mando Ramos, Manual Ortiz. even in say Baseball, the greatest player ever known was out of shape, most of his career. Babe Ruth. a notorious partyer.

 

Must be some misunderstanding, b. Sugar liked to party, but, unlike Pep 'n Jenkins, he did train hard.

Sandy was a very very proud guy. Many years later, aside from obligatory public appearances with Willie, off-camera, he still bristled at Pep's name.

As for Willie, it was water off a duck's back.

Sandy was just pissed that he didn't get his due. Joe really HATED Ali for how he'd been demeaned.

 

I'd say Saddler just felt unappreciated. Pep did not particularly like Saddler, but he respected him as a fighter.

I feel like guys like Armstrong, Robinson, Napoles, and Duran could have been much much greater than they were without their various alcoholism and self-discipline issues.... would have been interesting to see what they'd be like without the problems.
