Instead of bringing Quarry forward to meet Briggs, let's use our time machine to take Briggs back to the late 1960's, and see how he does in Jerry's era. I do not think we would even know his name, and that's your answer.

Briggs KO1... Quarry wins the rematch by decision in a very dull fight... the rubber match is a draw but Quarry gets dropped twice in a pretty decent fight.

Quarry feasted on big behemoths like Briggs..Quarry by the 4th round..he'd have Briggs down after a good battering like he did Mac Foster.

Actually Briggs may not have even made the grade back in the late 60's...the aforementioned Mac Foster would have stopped him, as would a few other big namres at the time, like Oscar Bonavena, Jimmy Ellis and Floyd Patterson.

Briggs was the perfect opponent for Jerry, who feasted on big heavyweights....I see a Quarry stop (Mac Foster or a beat down UD like Ron Lyle...If Shannon rushes Jerry it could be a KO-1 like he did vs Shavers

    Big?

Mac Foster was 24-0, 6'2" with a 75" reach and 210 Lbs. when he lost to Quarry (LKOby6). He was able to carry about 225Lbs. and still look solid.

Ron Lyle was 19-0, 6'3" with a 76" reach and 219 Lbs. when he lost to Quarry (L12). He was solid at and around 220Lbs.

Shannon Briggs is 6'4" with an 80" reach and has scored a KO weighing as much as 273 Lbs. (and still solid). He was 227 Lbs. when he beat George Foreman (W12) in '97. He was 268 Lbs. when he beat Siarhei Liakhovich for the WBO HW Title in '06.

Size isn't everything but Briggs is a big guy who knows how to use his size for the most part.

Sure, Briggs has been stopped twice in 58 fights but not since a prime Lennox Lewis did it in '98 (LKOby5). He gave Lewis trouble prior to the stoppage.

He was also stopped in '96 by Darroll Wilson (LKOby3). Wilson was a big puncher and scored 21 KOs in 27 wins (7 in the 1st round)... he just wasn't the most durable fighter of all-time. At 6'1" he had a long reach of 79" and was a solid 215Lbs. He would be considered big in Quarry's era.

    Briggs has fought among others-

    Sherman Griffin KO1

Darroll Wilson LKOby3 (225 Lbs. for this fight)

    Melton Bowen KO1

    Jorge Valdes KO10

    George Foreman W12

Lennox Lewis LKOby5 (228 Lbs. for this fight)

    Frans Botha D10

    Sedreck Fields L8

    Rey Minus KO1

    Jameel McCline L12

    Ray Mercer KO7

    Dicky Ryan KO4

    Siarhei Liakhovich KO12

    Sultan Ibragimov L12

Rob Calloway KO1 (at 6'2" with a 78" reach and a solid 212 Lbs. Calloway is bigger than a prime Quarry but a shrimp compared to Briggs)

    So... Quarry vs. Briggs?

IDK to be honest, but I do feel that Briggs is better than many people think on this thread. With that said... I'll go with Briggs in 1 in their first fight and Quarry by decision in the rematch, etc.

    why not?

Quarry gets so overrated on this forum it's not even funny... for that he suffers a 1st round KO loss in make believe land lol

    Hey, I said he'd win a rematch!

I like Quarry, but I agree with the cut of Hookie's jib. There's a freaky man-crush thing going on with 90% of the classic forum with Quarry. Although I think a fight between he and Briggs could go either way by knockout, Quarry could outpoint Briggs and I don't think Briggs could/would outpoint Quarry. So, I'd lean toward Quarry coming out on top as the more likely scenario.

Briggs is no better then he is being portrayed in this thread. Even at his best with his porous defence and slow reflexes he was easily hit with counter punches. Add to that stamina issues, a match with Quarry who was a very good counter puncher is a long night for Briggs.

It's because Quarry was a tough white guy. Many of these forum members see themselves in him. Quarry was tough, fun to watch, and a pretty good fighter (a real fan favorite)... he was no all-time great though... and NO, he wouldn't have done better during any other decade either! Every decade has produced a few greats (or close to great) that would have beat the crap out of somebody like Quarry.

    Who would he have beat?

Johnson, Dempsey, Tunney, Baer, Louis, Charles, Marciano, Liston, (we already know what happened in his own era), Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Foreman, Lewis, W. and V. Klitschko? Which era would he have ruled again?

Would Briggs do any better? Probably not, he does kinda suck but at least he'd have a legit punchers chance.

Quarry does what Francois Botha should have done and stops Briggs in the mid/late rounds, or atleast wins a clear decision.
