I think it's a self explanatory comment mate, but in even simpler terms, I don't believe Hopkins has any fighter on his wins who is on another level to anyone on Mayweather's.

Trinidad - Quite overrated. Not the same force at 160
De La Hoya - Nothing spectacular at middleweight at all.
Tarver - Also overrated in my view. Coming down a lot of weight after the Rocky film alledgedly (good win nonetheless)
    Pavlik - ****
Johnson - Not very good when faced.
    Wright - Barely worth mentioning.
    Jones - Same as above.
    Joppy - Decent win

    Mayweather's notable opponent;

    Corrales - Good win
Castillo - Good win, depending on your view of the fight. 2nd fight cleared it up anyway.
Judah - not bad win. Coming off a loss though.
Baldomir - supposedly 'the man'. Nothing spectacular at all.
De La Hoya - decent win IMO
Hatton - Good win at time, ok win in retrospect.
JMM - Comparable win to Hopkins' over DLH I believe. Both being overrated wins that is.
    Mosely - Good win.

Their records are comparable I think. No clear class difference. Both have overrated wins.

I don't rate Hopkins' wins over De la Hoya or Wright much either to be honest, but he gets more credence for certain wins IMO./

Tarver was Ring champ; two jumps up in weight (one original weight class mind you)

Hopkins was the only one to stop Johnson

Pavlik is pretty ****, but that was a good win when you take into account Hopkins age. It's easy to forget that he was the 'opponent' for that fight, and also came down in weight himself as well as Pavlik going up. Did Floyd do the same for JMM? Hatton?

Trinidad was a very, very good win IMO. Seeing as he'd destroyed Joppy beforehand, which was a 'good win' for B-Hop in your opinion. That was a masterful dissection.

Floyds win over Mosley was decent, but not on the level of the Trinidad win IMO. What also makes Hopkins clearly superior is that he'd done this at such an old age, and has remained technically proficient.

His dominance over one division was ace as well. Floyd has clearly picked and chosen IMO, Hopkins ducked no one as far as I can see/remember.

its all based on opinion, but I'd say Hop had the better opponents, with more clinical performances, which is what most people seem to point at when discussing Floyds supposed unattainable ability.

I do think the Trinidad win is decent, I just stand by my point that he wasn't the same force, so it's not a truly great win (which both fighters sorely lack).

Goop points made. Hopkins does have his division dominance in his favour, but I was only on about 'name wins', and in that regard I think they are comparable.

I think both are overrated in any case.

I'd be interested to see who you consider bona fide greats (no sarcasm) :good

And fair point on the Pavlik win. It's a decent scalp due to the circumstances. Not the opponent though.

In order? I don't have a list outside of a top ten done for a poll. I'm far from a walking tome on boxing, but I know enough about certain fighters.

I hardly rate the guy, but he was effective at 160 prior to the Hopkins bout. Now he's terrible, though he had a few good rounds against Martinez....though Martinez might not be the World beater he appears to be yet.

damn, todays landscape just seems decent across the whole board, only a few fighters really stand out IMO. Maybe in a few years I'll look back and say I was wrong, but maybe thats because it will regress even more

The two fighters this thread is about make me go 'Wow' every time I watch them, and when I first found out about them. Todays fighters mainly uninspire, though thats as much to do with a shift in societal opportunities and media politics IMO, which has made it easier to make big bucks.

Fair enough, seeing as I have B-Hop in the 40-50 bracket we might not be able to debate on the matter. Nevermind :good

Don't worry, I don't have Mayweather in my top 10
It wasn't a case of me arguing for him against Hopkins, I just think they both have underwhelming records considering the credit they get. If I was to do a list past a top ten right now it would be riddled with inconsistencies I feel. I remember reading about people using tiers on here, and I think I have that concept in mind to a degree.
I got into an argument about Ali and Duran on the top ten poll thread because I believe if you are to have Duran highly rated then Ali shouldn't be very far away from him. Kind of like the tiers idea I suppose.

    That's debatable anyway.

IMO, the top five is a lock, anything between 6-15 can be shouted about until you cannot speak. My top five is 1. Greb 2. Armstrong 3. Robinson 4. Charles 5. Langford
