This is one of my all time favorite fights in this fight a less experienced Arguello defeats El Puas. Regardless of weight, Arguello was the bigger and stronger man overall... He'd beat Olivares 4 outta 5 times with ease... MR.BILL
Great fight. This was exceptional because it was an example of a young fighter who went to school and still won, proving his own worth in the process. You had the teacher (Olivares) and the student (Arguello) both coming out of it looking good, which is very rare. Very special fight in that way.
In truth, I feel Alexis was weak at 126.... Perhaps even at 130, as well.?.? But A.A. looked strong and fit at 135...... A.A. was still capable at 140, but Pryor was too peaked in 1982 / '83 for Arguello... If Arguello was able to face Olivares at 130 and above, he'd hammer Olivares easy....... 118 to 126 was Olivares' range; 126 was light for Arguello...... MR.BILLhat
Well, like Zarate was at 118, Arguello was at 126---HUGE!! Both vato's must have lived off rice and water to make them weights.?.? MR.BILL
Arguello is arguably the greatest 130 lber ever. He beat Escalera x 2, Limon, Chacon, Castillo, Navarette. All stoppings. Weak? Olivares was outboxing Arguello and only Arguello's strength pulled it out. Here's a prime Arguello performance at 126, devastating: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbC19bUSgJE[/ame]
According to Alexis himself it was the Marcel fight that convinced him he needed to learn to box; that raw power would not see him through. By the time El Flaco move to 130 he was becoming an extremely good boxer. By the time he left 130 I think that, pound for pound, he was one of the best stand up boxer/puncher type fighters of all time.
Yeah and at 80 plus pro fights when he fought Arguello, Olivares was just hitting his peak, and 130 pounds wasn't a full two divisions above his (Olivares) best either.
I think Arguello's 130 legacy suffers because VCR's were not yet commercially available ;-)................Quite possibly your best avatar ever JT, and that's sayin' a lot.
Cheers mate, i always had a soft spot for her slightly airhead character on The OC. You might be right per vcr's, tho many (serious fans) have caught up with some of his brilliant 130 work. IMO he peaked at 130, no if's or but's.
A few things mentioned here have suggested that Arguello was inexperienced and weak at the time of this fight, which doesn't reflect kindly on Olivares' performance and only enhances Arguello's. The truth of the matter is that he was not inexperienced and that he was engaging in his 45th pro fight having already duked it out with Ernesto Marcel, Jose Legra, Art Hafey, Famoso Gomez, Valentin Galeano, Enrique Garcia, Raul Mora and Sigfrido Rodriguez. Moreover, it wasn't like he came into the fight after struggling with 3 trips to the steambath. He came in at 124 1/2 (he was like 122 1/2 for the Marcel fight) and stayed at this weight for another 2 years. So he was very comfortable at featherweight. As for the fight, after 12 rounds, I had the fight 8-2-2 in favor of Olivares. I'll take nothing away from Arguello or his stellar career or the fact that I consider him an ATG. But against Olivares that night, he got very lucky. Scartissue
