How about boxers who were great at defence, but could still starch a man with one shot? I can't recall too many fighters like this, but there are a few, let's find them.
Mike McCallum was one of the best defensive fighters of his generation, and while I wouldn't exactly classify him as having one-punch KO power, he did manage to knockout Donald Curry with a single shot..
Cervantes was good at this. (Many are of the mind that a one punch knockout off the ropes is the most exciting punch in boxing.) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2tmaeXm1yY[/ame]
Cervantes could be hit though. Benitez would have been fearsome had he displayed this kind of one punch power throughout his whole career: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNvSfmtTeDA[/ame] Archie Moore was very good defensively, but is more so known for his punching ability.
Benitez was described by Palomino as the lightest hitter he ever fought. ("Tap, tap, tap" was how Carlos described it.) SRL protested vehemently, proclaiming, "I say Wilfred Benitez can hit!" While taking the fight to Benitez on the ropes was generally a prescription for defeat prior to Hamsho, at least it took away his power and promoted survival. Trying to get cute by making him come forward though could be suicidal, as his power magnified dramatically on the front foot. Tony Petronelli, Randy Shields, Johnny Turner and Maurice Hope discovered this the hard way. pissBoxWRECK records Benitez-Hope as a TKO. That was as pure a clean full count knockout as there could be.)
Palomino had a ridiculous chin on him. I thought Benitez got him pretty good with some right hands though, but I guess he didn't even feel them. Cus D'Amato said that Benitez could hit but was too defensive-minded to really put a hurt on his opponents.
I love that swagger that Benitez has as Hope crashes to the canvas..Benitez was one of the most LIKEABLY arrogant fighters of all time!
