Saldivar was great, one of the best southpaw left hands ever.

Sands looks good against Olson but Bobo is an awkward opponent to fight against. Olson took a pretty good punch at this stage of his career.

Olson generally did well against fighters who tried to box him too. I've seen him KO'd plenty of times, but I don't think I've seen him outslicked/outmaneuvered like this before. I think Sands' power may have had Olson a bit tentative.

Only after Archie Moore was done with him though. Before that he was known as a fairly tough guy. Turpin and Sands could hit and Robinson was extended the first time and taken to a decision the second time.

Olson couldn't really bully Sands in close like he does most fighters.

Some highlights of Joey Giardello in the late '50s.

Here's Giardello's first and third fights with rugged fringe contender Franz Szuzina. These two wins were part of a lengthy unbeaten streak by Giardello in the late '50s that probably represented his peak.

    [yt]v5rmrrQCSLY[/yt]

Giardello's streak came to an end when he lost on a close, disputed upset decision to Joey Giambra. It was the third meeting between the two, with Giambra winning 2 out of 3.

Following the loss to Giambra, Giardello tried to quickly (perhaps too quickly?) regain his ranking by taking on fellow top contender Spider Webb. However, Webb's quicker, sharper combinations busted up Giardello's face and caused him to lose by 7th round stoppage.

Giardello didn't recover too well from the Webb loss. In his next fight after that, he was outhustled and lost on a close upset decision to Ralph "Tiger" Jones, who he had already beaten twice before.

Ironically, the losses to Giambra, Webb, and Jones seem to have done more to help his career than all of the big wins he had scored to that point, as titleholder Gene Fullmer, perhaps believing Giardello was on the decline, gave him a title shot soon after. However, Giardello was foiled by a controversial draw in Fullmer's backyard and had to wait for several years after that before receiving another shot.

Peter Müller in one of the most bizarre and shocking fights ever, vs. Hans Stretz.

There is a story behind that. Müller got his boxing licensed revoked after the fight. Later came out that the referee in both Stretz-Müller fights actually was the father of Stretz wife and that he indeed cheated Müller all the time. The referee got banned from boxing, Müller got his license back. Müller was and still is a hero in cologne.

Thanks for thee footage My2Sense and RagingBull, long time since I saw some footage of Scholz. Big fan of the guy.

Max Schmeling TKO 9 Steve Hamas II:

    [yt]Zx-W672FQzg[/yt]

The rematch between former HW champ Schmeling (the one with the white stripes around his trunks) and talented-but-inconsistent contender Hamas.

A year earlier, the supposedly washed up Hamas had made what amounted to his "last hurrah" and upset Schmeling in what was considered The Ring's "Upset of the Year." That, in turn, led to the belief that Schmeling was washed up, and set the stage for Schmeling to score his own "Upset of the Year" when he beat Joe Louis the very next year.

In the rematch between Schmeling and Hamas, a more fiery and determined Schmeling gave Hamas a thorough licking before a delighted crowd on his home turf in Germany.

Hamas was 28 and didn´t have that much milage on him. Also, inconsistent? He had 3 losses against two men he also beat and one of them was Tommy Loughran. I would argue that Hamas was right at his peak when Schmeling ended his career. Never got how he could lose the first fight though.

Made a shorter highlight of your video for those with less patience. :good

    [dm]xhuq7y_max-schmeling-vs-steve-hamas-ii-highlights_sport[/dm]

I think both men despite claims to the contrary were very much in their prime at the time of this fight. Schmeling was pin-point accurate with his right hands and delivered a brutal beating to the game Hamas, who suffered heavy career-ending injuries from this bout.
