DeGale is the better fighter, also has more charisma, these two factors will result in him exceeding Groves.
I'm not convinced about DeGale - I think the guy is going to get sparked out at more elite levels of boxing. I'll even go so far as to say, he won't be able to successfully defend a World title. I can see him being a bit of a Kevin Mitchell in that he'll sparkle at domestic / Euro level but get found out on the big stage.
Needs to keep that left up, learn to pop the jab from shoulder level and not from the waist as a result. I wouldn't have such a problem with this is he used his shoulder as a line of defence but he doesn't. Needs to stop dropping his right aswell when he looks to get his shots off. He looks to have stopped pulling away from punches, but defensively he's still got flaws and is very reliant on his feet getting him out trouble, hence his wide stance.
I think it will be a great fight but i see Groves winninig, but Degale is looking good too, its a tough call maybe im on the fence with this one..
Considering neither one has settled on a style, I don't see how we can measure them. I think putting them in against each other right now is a huge waste. If it was in a world title eliminator or something, then ok - but right now... we haven't seen the fighters they're going to be.
To be honest with you, you might be right, having thought about it, maybe I was a bit too hasty making my assertions, people have made some good points, points that I hadn't considered myself, that said, the thread was more in relation to how much play Groves was getting, I just felt the regard he was held in, as prospect, by some fans, did not marry upto the actual talent/potential he has, plus, I think De Gale gets a little down played, given that he is not a particularly well liked. Dont get me wrong, I dont like De Gale myself, but....
Yeah it's early to say and I could be very wrong but let me make an early prediction anyway. I will go with Groves. I haven't seen much of him but he looks the type to pick his shots, he looks like a no nonsense kind of guy. De Gale tries too hard trying to be flashy and ****. On the other hand, it's much better for him to mess around and experiment now than when he steps up a level. Still, from what I've seen I'm not sure he's all that good. He slaps a lot too and he seems the type of guy who will get distracted by the fame and the money. If they fought now, I would put my money on Groves.
For me it's a lot more worrying when guys showboat at this stage. It shows a lack of respect and discipline, and it's something they end up defending as part of their style. But as for experimenting, yeah - but after ten fights, he should be developing a clear style or at least fixing on a few things. I see too much of him relying on his reflexes to avoid trouble rather than his decent footwork. Plus his tendency to slap with his punches makes him easy to time down the middle - not against the guys he's fighting, but Paul Smith does have a decent straight right when he chooses to employ it. Could dent his chin. And I don't think he's got particularly concussive power. He can crack a little, but until we see him against someone a bit more proven, I'm deferring judgement. Groves has fought better opposition so far (but not by much), but no one who's really tested him either.
