If this system is better than the old then the sport is a joke. Corruption in boxing is nothing new, i dont see how the current system has improved it at all. Id rather the old system with its corrupt elements. Better than watching a slugfest for three rounds and the score ends up 3-1
Bloody tricky thing to get right the scoring, unfortunately. You only have to ask Roy Jones about the old system to know it doesn't work.
That had nothing to do with scoring or judging. He got screwed because of corruption. They can still screw guys under this system...just dont push the red or blue button. Im sure corrupt officials are doing it as we speak.
Any system that involves human judgement can be srewed with, unfortunately. Perhaps they should mount a pair of lights above each of the judges. So that each time they press for a fighter it is visible to the world - that might keep the *******s a bit more honest!
WTF??? Hope it wasn't due to somethin he'd started!! Anyone know wat was up with Dan Mulivai's fight?? just got told by a mate something went down with the scoring. something to do bout bein penalised or awarded points for fouling his opponent or bein fouled something like that??
It's almost a damed id u do damed if u dont type situation with the body punchin..... Body punchin is still a nesescity in the sport for some. they may not always score but goin to the body may be the only option for the boys to slow opponents down etc.... perhapes more emphasis has to be put on developing body punchin skills from a distance??? :huh
agreed. although i watch alot of amateur fights and the jab to the body, the long straight and the long looping right often score. this was truly unique to this tournament. i think the main thing with the oz fighters is to teach them how to throw to the body. some of those high guards were asking for liver shots - and if they were thrown properly the fight should've been over. its not something i hear people talk about but you hit the body different to the head. you need to snap the punch to the body not hit thru like you do the head. check out the ultimate in body punchers micky ward throw that left to liver - he has a distinct "whip & snap" action let a body shot go like that, it wont matter if it scores
I've watched a bit of amateur fighting over time and can't remember the last time I saw a point awarded for a body punch! You're right with the liver punch. But outside of that, guys might as well employ the peek-a-boo guard all the time. Once in front on the scorecard, there's little to stop you just putting up the shutters. It's not only fundamentally wrong, it's no preperation for a pro career.

[/quote] Indeed. in fact i've take to training the amo's i work with to knock one hand away with angled jab and follow right behind with the straight right for that exact reason. its a little awkward, the attacking tends to fall into the punch, but it tends to work the first couple of goes.
Ozzies are all out. Id hate to be a fighter who has to tell family and friends he only scored one point in nine minutes when he probably scored ten or more. Its complete and utter bs and is robbing these kids of a more deserving card.
Alot of the scorring was corrupt for these games. I watched a few fights and clearly the knuckle part of the glove landed but no point was scored, this happen on many occasions. I dont think the push button system works at all. We have things like face recognition software out there now im sure they can put their heads together and come up with some software and or system that takes the human corruption out all together and can recognise punches landed to scoring parts of the body with the knuckle part of the glove. If such a system/software existed i think it would clean up the amateurs a tone. Its likely to be expensive as the software would need to be intergrated into some type of camera system and possible sensors in the knuckle part of the glove to ensure that enough force was applyed to register a scoring punch. There isnt much money in amateur boxing so i dont think that this software will be developed for the sport anytime soon nor will these corrupt officals give up their positions and endorse such a system.
