There is a view that old time fighters were "natural". There was no performance enhacing drugs, steroids etc. But from what I read old fighters and their cornerman had some tricks to keep the fighter strong. There were no restrictions like today and cornerman coulds add some spice to boxers between rounds. I also heard that they used salts to keep badly beaten man concious. They also took shots from novocaine before the bout for bad hands.

Gene Tunney admitet that he only once used stuff like this against Greb. Do you know any other old time boost tricks?

    How old is "Old Fighters?"

Monzon used novocaine for years because of sore hands - even before he became champion.

I'm interesed in fighters from 1900-1960 in most. But If you know more actual examples of corner tricks I would be happy to read them.

Monzon used novocaine in his last 5 years of career because or arthritis. Never heard about his sore hands in early career.

    Some modern tricks:

Adrenaline 1:1000 (Commonly known as epinephrine). This is really the least of your concerns right now but they are necessary to treating cuts. Epinephrine is a vessel constrictor and is used by dipping a cotton swab or gauze pad into it and applying it straight to a cut. It works to stop the bleeding by constricting the blood vessels. Crucial.

Avitene is a coagulant that it applied to the cut in order to help facilitate and speed up the coagulation process. There are other coagulants but this is the only one you'll probably ever need.

    Booze.

A shot or two after a hard round and within minutes your head is clearer than it was and all the pain is gone.

The trick is to give the fighter a buzz, and not cross that fine line to drunk, when his fighting ability will go down.

Believe it or not. In England they sometimes poured champagne over a boxers head during the intervals.

Wouldn't that make you puke your guts out in a fight? Here have a little drink...some JD, blood, and water...get hit in the face and gut a few times. That just ain't workin'...
Addendum: Depending on styles, you could tryand lobby to get a smaller or larger ring...cushioned or hard surface. Smaller/Larger gloves...

i think it's agreed that it was some coagulents and vasaline in listons eye. liston used to touch his forehead like most fighters do to keep it up. after 2 rounds of it some got on the glove and ended p in ali's eye

    "Agreed" not really!

Sure, maybe people agree that it was some sort of coagulant but the nature in which it got into Ali's eyes is hardly agreed upon.

You'd think, man, but work it did. Numerous cases of it documented. The Lion of Flanders got drunk off his ass in between rounds against Ali, for instance.

I like how current fighters are cheating, untrustworthy scum with unfair substances coursing through their veins. Abusing opium in-between rounds however, a very, very unfair advantage is absolutely never held against any old time fighter.:lol::lol::lol:
