[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L19nOzFlLj8[/ame] pretty much had Hurtado out with the first punch. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9PoEOQUvoo[/ame] Go to 7:18 of the clip I hear so much in this classic section that its not Whitaker's fault he had little power...... Pernell Whitaker could crack, he just did'nt have the guts to go for it and take a risk against better opposition in situations that called for it.
What situations would you proffer? The guy didn't lose legitimately in 13 years  Please don't dare mention Jose, one of the great historic robberies. DLH, well that was reasonably close and Whitaker was old. More agression may well have backfired. The only other losses were the last two fights of his career and he gave 100% vs Trinidad. Just can't see where he needed to sorry.
Hey Vlade, what do you think about this punch at 2:35? I bet you wouldn't have even scored it, since Pernell was moving backwards and all :yep [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQqgwTWAxe4[/ame]
What are you talking about Scientist, Whitaker bounced off of and propelled himself off the ropes to crack Lomeli. .....and look at Whitaker act the part of finisher right after Lomeli got up, he went Kamakazee on poor Louie. Dont tell me Whitaker could'nt finish.:yep Beautiful shot by Whitaker, should have done some of that against Chavez and DLH.......but of course, those guys are not Lomeli, so the Peaster preferred to play it safe, even in the DLH fight were Lou Duva was pleading with him to do more.
Trinidad simply overwhelmed Whitaker with power and activity. Whitaker did the only thing he could at that point, potshot from the outside in hopes of getting lucky. I do believe though that he dropped too many of the early rounds vs Chavez by simply not even trying to counter with shots of any substance. Whitaker spent too many rounds vs Chavez in fast retreat with no intentions to attempt to throw anything of significance. The Ramirez fight alone should have driven it to Whitaker's head that the judges would not be impressed. ......and the DLH fight of course. Not enough real attempts to fight, and too much stalling.......and against America's Golden boy sweetheart no less. Lou Duva in his corner knew, why did'nt Whitaker???
**** I don't want to flog a dead horse but Roy Jones again was an amazing defensive fighter in his prime and at 160-168 had serious one punch power.
Didn't have the "GUTS" ???? atsch Whitaker was one of the top ten pound for pound fighters of the second half of the 20th Century without question. He was exceptional. Far past his best he almost beat a prime De La Hoya two divisions above his best weight and held his ground against a prime Trinadad ... his guts/heart are unquestioned.
Gonna propose something crazy here: I think Chavez had a better chin than either Hurtado, Nazario or Lomeli. I know it's hard to believe but I have this intuition that it might be true.... That or Whitaker is a chicken, I don't know....
The most obvious answer and I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned yet is Archie Moore ... another is Ray Leonard ... Benitez was no power hitter .. I cannot remember him ever layout out anyone other than Hope ... that was a great KO but to me a near one off ... similar to Nunn's stoppage of Kalambay ...
