    Peerless Jem.

Kalambay probably won't be remembered for having discombobulating KO power, but that one punch slaying of DeWitt is etched in my mind quite indelibly.

It's already been well-documented - both on here and further afield - that Pep and Pastrano could both hit with not-inconsiderable fizz on the particular occasions when twinkling around and making the other bloke swipe at thin air wasn't at the forefront of their agenda(s).

Agreed. Chavez and DLH had tons more in every dept. than did those fighters, which is why Whitaker played it safe.......not really blaming him.....

......the truth is that the way he fought was the only way he could have won.
......just honestly, I feel he needed to do more than what he did vs Chavez.
More than half of the rounds he fought vs Chavez he was'nt even attempting to counter Chavez' aggression.
......looking at that fight in hindsight, I'd have to say that in Whitaker's mind he thought he was taking those rounds simply on defense.
.....honestly somebody in his corner needed to remind him that professional judges put significantly more weight on substantive offense not of the pitter pat variety.

The DLH fight was much worse for Whitaker imo, in that at least there, Lou Duva was letting him know he was losing the rounds and had to do more than what he was doing.......to my suprise, Whitaker looked dumbfounded and defiantly tells Duva, "I'm winning".....or something to that extent.

Poor Lou, he did'nt have the heart or courage to tell Pea to his face, "no you're not"........and the final official scored reflected it.

Joe Gans and Benny Leonard set the template. Canzoneri could be mentioned, too since he was quite difficult to catch with a clean flush shot when he was at his best.

Sugar Ray Leonard has very good defense and very good power. So did Napoles.

My apologies.....I've been having recent discussions with *******s in the general forum, and for some reason I confused you with one of them......

How you say? Well, they frequently use the word butthurt, and that alone triggered me to call you a *******.
Again, my apologies, I thought you were one of them.

Speaking of Kalambay, he was the victim of a devestating one punch KO at the hands of a defensive Maestro......

GO OTTKE!!! And I'm serious, much to the horror and consternation of countless posters I'm sure..but for as many debateable decisions as the guy was involved in and all that kind of ****, he really came through in the clutch, as they say, when it counted in this bout and showed championship character in the process.:good...yeah, I was a fan of Ottke, but then what would you expect from a fan of Hugo Corro and Jimmy Young (among countless others)?
Speaking of Willie Pastrano..I'll add him as an example..and cite his last title defense...the 11th round tko of Terry Downes was essentially a one punch stoppage..it took virtually nothing to finish Downes off after that first decking which came from a huge left hook. I know I'll be scorned for mentioning Willie P, but hey...it's evidence that the guy could whack...just like Angelo Dundee said he could, when he committed himself to his punches.

I hated him back then and I hate him today. BUT he get´s too much ****. He destroyed Germany´s credibility as a home for boxers - or at the very least rocked it hard - was ugly to watch and was involved in too many close fights that should have been much wider - even though not as much as most people think. The Reid fight was one of the worst things happening in boxing in the last 20 years and more and it showed the lack of character of Ottke. Outside of his he actually had only three fights that really are debatable. Brewer I, Mitchell, Larsen. All three are close and could have gone either way but they weren´t robberies. All in all he has a decent resume, faced everyone during his time in his weighclass outside of Calzaghe, who was as unwilling to face him as the other way around and his stablemate Beyer, unified and was the best smw for quite a while. A bit sad, albeit understandable, that he get´s reduced to one fight.

I've said it for a long time...Ottke KNOWS boxing. He's one of the most expert practitioners and analysts in the sport. Example:

Geee Bodhi, I wouldn't be that down on him...a little controversy dosen't hurt a thing..and he did draw attention to Germany, whether it was good or bad..I think it was good mostly..sort of the German Calzaghe..or is Calzaghe the Welsh Ottke??? Dosen't matter...any publicity is good publicity sometimes..
