Lost to Lennox Lewis. Over terribly weak opposition. I will give you this one. Aside from being laid out in his kickboxing career (see below) he has never been on the canvas. Lost the opening round to Corrie Sanders, was tagged cleanly several times and staggered badly. Nothing to brag about - world kickboxing is terribly fragmented and the titles are pretty meaningless. Do not forget too that he was sparked out by the now retired domestic level British fighter Pele Reid.
The fact is, people are putting Williams and Hide in his top 5, Hide wasn't even a legitimate heavy and would have been knocked out by any true heavyweight who was B level plus. Williams is a guy - as much as I like him - who didn't even legitimately reach European level, and is regarded only as a top-class domestic fighter.
Peter is probably Vitali's best win. Wlad beat two superior versions of Peter and it's debatable whether either of those wins are even in his top 5. People talk about the lack of competition, Wlad has managed to forge a decent resumé for himself in the same era, why couldn't Vitali?
Corrie Sanders Juan Carlos Gomez Herbie Hide Sam Peter Danny Williams/Kirk Johnson He's got some more work to do.
It's a terrible resume. Yeah, you can talk about how many rounds he lost, how many knockouts he's got and so on, but plenty of other heavyweights have dominated abysmal fighters too. Someone like Oscar Bonavena would be his best win by a clear margin.
Exactly. There's another thread on it somewhere where someone says the Klitschkos often get looked at and their resume rated as if they are one fighter, I think this is probably true. People hear the name Klitschko and think 'domination of the division'.
1. Peter -Win over #2 Heavy after 4 year lay off. 2. Sanders -For the Ring Belt, Sanders more motivated than credit for. 3. Arreola -A game top 10 contender. 4. Kirk Johnson -Out of shape but still well regarded top 10 contender. 5. Gomez -Former Cruiser Champion and top 10 fighter. Vitali is certainly not an all time great and will likely never be after starting boxing so late and losing so many prime years to injury. However, with 4 defenses to his credit and victories over several top 10 fighters and former contenders, he's approaching Byrd and Ruiz as the most domintant alphabet Champion of all time.
People seem to put too much emphasis on the Lewis fight when rating Vitali. Fact is Vitali wasn't THAT far ahead of a past it Lewis in the fight. People act like he was on his way to a certain victory and was stopped by an unlucky cut, that's bull****. If he hadn't been stopped by the cut I believe Lewis would have beat him anyway. But that's irrelevant, fact is he lost. The booing of Lewis that night was ****ing disgraceful. I've never understood what so many boxing fans have against Lewis but it certainly isn't objective criticism.

No, I am afraid that I do not. A lot of cruiserweights go up in weight. Right now we have Gaye, Adamek and JC Gomez as top contenders. Other fighters like Chambers, Povetkin, Boytsov, Chagaev, Solis are more of cruiserweights than full fledged heavyweights. You could look at the picture from this angle too. Those wins of Vitaliy KlitschKO are worthy our attention.
This. Note: Anyone who thinks Vitali was beating Lewis becuase of the scorecards is a moron. Those judges were bias as hell, in reality Vitali only took the 1st two rounds, then once warmed-up; old flabby Lewis made Vitali his girlfriend for the preceding four rounds. Vitali was badly hurt at the end of round 6 & desperately holding on to save himself. If the fight hadn't been stopped on that horrific cut, then Lewis would have KO'd Vitali in the 7th.
Most cruisers who go up and are not on the same level as they are when fighting at their preferred weight. Especially if they come against a large heavy with all the physical advantages like Vitali has. They may be ok wins but them being naturally much smaller and out of their better weight class has to be taken into account.
I am afraid that your memories are too faded. The tables has turned not because Lewis got warmed up. It was because he got lucky with one punch that cut Vitaliy's eyebrow. It was a fluke. It was not a hard punch but it determined the outcome. Vitaliy had problems with the blood pouring into his eye. Lewis started landing afterwards.
