True, Taylor was being considered much better than Holyfield and Whitaker.

i agree with the posts about jones and toney to an extent but does the toney win qualify as career defining? it's certainly his BEST win and i guess if you took it away, there would be a big gap but he'd still have hopkins

considering how many great wins were previously listed for toney, that's precisely why i don't feel don't has a career definer. he has so many great wins that ONE doesn't stand out. nunn made him a star but certainly doesn't define him

why do you think a fighter must only have one big win to be considered a fighter with a career-defining win? hagler had wins over duran, antuofermo, minter, and later mugabi, but hearns was still his career-definer because of the build-up, the quality of the opponent, the performance, and what it meant for his legacy. in the same way, jones has wins over a green b-hop, hill, ruiz, tarver, etc, but by far the most important and high-profile was the way he took the unbeaten p4p#2 toney to school. of course if you remove that one win then the resumes of jones and hagler still look solid, but that doesn't mean they did not have a career-definer.

well i guess it's how it how we think of career defining...

frazier's career is defined by the ali win for instance. without it, his career would look vastly different.

for jones and toney, no one win, for me, stands head and shoulder's above the others. not having a career defining win isn't a knock: some fighters have shitty career defining wins (ie: it's been said that for lewis its the win over tyson)

Miguel Canto, maybe. Has a lot of very good wins on his resume, of course, but I'm not sure if the wins over Gonzalez and Oguma truly define his career.

What you describe are great wins. Not career defining. Frazier-Ali I was career defining, Schmeling-Louis I and II were career defining. Chavez-Taylor I and Whitaker-Chavez were not. They miss the little bit extra.

Double standards, bra. Below me you just stated Jones and Toney's defining wins due to rank...where was Hatton ranked when Mayweather defeated him? No.2

He was undefeated too, which you also used

Many have that fight but out of them many are not victories over great fighters .. just famous encounters ..

Lets see an argument over what constitutes a 'career definining' win. I'm sure many fighters would consider a win over the second best fighter in their division or a top5 or even top10 P4p fighter of the time career defining. Sometimes wins are massive comercially, sometimes more so a battle of great talents that are retrospectively considered great but not at the time

Going by some of the standards around here you could argue Pacquaio doesn't have a career defining fight, something I'd disagree with

think i know what you mean....its having one big name on your record...and a lot of greats have more than just one defining win...
like, has ali or robinson either got one standout defining win ?

Hm, you could argue Foreman for Ali but I don“t think the argument is very strong.

I remember following Calzaghe, I'm sure on here most will say he hasnt got a career defining win. I thought Eubank was a career defining win at the time, but then Eubank was faded, on short notice and weight drained. Lacy I thought it was career defining in the moment of hype, though maybe not, but when he unified against the last remaining SMW champ Kessler it certainly felt like a career defining win at the time, now its seen as only a decent win. Then theres Hopkins, but that was controversal and Hopkins was old

How about Arguello, I'm sure theres a case he doesn't have 1
