He never really rebounded from that defeat, and retired 3 years later without having scored another win.

(I didn't restrain myself here as I do for some of your trivia, because there is something of a mind reading element involved, and there might be more than one answer, as Doug's guess of Norman Hayes comes so close to suggesting.) For a while, Spencer-Terrell was on youtube, and I'd like to see it return. Ernie was much better against Thad than he was earlier in 1967 with Ali, avenging a second round knockdown from Spencer's right hand with a long left hook. (Terrell's subsequent knockdown is omitted by issboxWRECK. Watching it from beginning to end makes it clear that it was far more competitive than most literary descriptions suggest.) Watching Thad win can help bring into context just what JQ achieved in upsetting him.
Spencer sure looked good in beating Terrell, and then Quarry looked REAL good in whipping Spencer. I don't think Thad ever recovered from Quarry's signature effort.
