This is the 3rd meeting between the two fighters. Charnley had lost both the previous fights challenging for Browns World Lightweight title, the first on a 6th round cuts stoppage and the second via a narrow 15 round points decision. This was a non-title contest as Brown had lost his world title to Carlos Ortiz the previous year and it was looking like time may have at last started to catch up with the 36 year old Joe "Old Bones" Brown..... Cheers Slip and Jon, I thought this thread was going to sink without a trace!!! Charnley was one hell of a fighter, Brown was on the slide by the time of this fight (looking back so was Charnley in all probabilty) but still a great win.
Gaz, do you know if there's footage available of the second fight? that's probabily a better reflection of both their abilities. I would love to see that fight.
I don't think so mate. Charnley is my Dads favorite fighter and I've asked on a few forums and torrent sites for a copy so I can do a DVD for him but I've always come up blank. It was def. filmed because my old man has seen it but maybe its just one of those fights thats been lost. It was FOTY and pretty close, the UK radio commentators had Charnley winning but from what my Dad says that was wishful thinking.
That's such a shame. :-( so much treasure has been lost. By the sounds of it, Rudkin deserved his decision more then Charnley. I'm trying to post Barry Michael vs. Al Carter, but i'm absolutely hopeless with this stuff.
yep, its frustrating the fights that have been wiped. I guess its a case of "the glass half full" these days with torrent sites and YouTube making all these old fights availiable? What are you having trouble with uploading the Michael fight?
I just don't know where to even start tbh. Telling you mate i'm that hopeless. atsch Don't worry about it though, someone on the Aussie forum is posting the Michael vs. Ropis fight for me and he said he'll upload the Al Carter fight along with it too.
Charnley is a largely forgotten fighter,and it's criminal.A bull of a Lightweight and a southpaw at that he also gave Welterweights a hard time.

Thanks alot for this Gaz, was my first viewing of a Charnley fight :thumbsup Despite the old age of Brown it was really a terrific little performance in there. Judging from the first 2 rounds I thought Charnley would win through constant pressure and wearing the older man down but I loved the switch in the 3rd when Charnley was outboxing and counterpunching the great American! Normal business resumes in the 5th though and Charnley gives Brown a bit of a pasting over the next couple of rounds up to the finish. Enjoyable sunday viewing, keep up with your uploads :good
Most of the weight classes in the 60's were stacked to the brim with talent, especially lightweight. Charnley, class act though he was, can count himself a bit unlucky to have competed in such a tough division. Beating the likes of the great Old Bones here (who a lot of people also thought he deserved the nod over in their second fight), Matthews, Lane, Stable, Cullen, Morgan, Toweel and Jordan as he did is no small feat. I think though that this particular fight occurred between a couple of costly slip-up losses to Bunny Grant and Tito Marshall both which occurred at times when he might have been due for title shots against Ortiz. That said, Dave had been handily beaten by Ortiz once already and I doubt that he would have ever beaten him despite being eager for a crack. His upset win over Lane when he looked to be on the way down put him right back into the frame at a time when Ortiz was becoming a bit vulnerable due to the high life. Unfortunately, for reasons that I don't know/understand, he wound up moving up in weight and getting fustigated by Griffith while Ismael Laguna was busy ripping the lightweight crown from Ortiz. He was an excellent fighter though, albeit one who often seemed to get the wrong breaks at the wrong time. This footage is brill, cheers for putting it up.
