I think Briggs was saying that mostly because he never took a beating that bad. That was brutal I think Vitali has more dominance to come.

just like foreman saying he'd have no chance with lewis years ago.

just because a fighter says something doesn't make it true or even that the guy believes it himself.

He probably would, Tyson at least, but he had a chance against against a 37 near 38yo past prime ATG and lost. Holyfield gave a much younger better Lennox a close fight, so not a given Vitali wins

Vitali is underrated on this classic board none the less, I'm inclined to think he maybe top10 head to head, but then again thats not entirely fair to the malnutritioned old timers

How was it losing your 800 bucks?
that was really stupid imo. briggs is to inconsistent to put that kind of money on.
And what a ****ing domination... 12 rounds to none.. Only thing he could have done is stop briggs

It's once again a case of a fighter praising the power of the guy that he survived to the limit against, who didn't knock him down..at the expense of the guy who did knock him on his ass, namely Lewis. The other comparison..vs Foreman..is a bit surprising however. Vitali's power, however impressive, dosn't compare to Foreman's or Lewis's. Vitali's toughness however, IS comparable to Lewis and Foreman..so there's a bit of believeability in that aspect. Oh, who knows..fighters say all kinds of **** after a fight...and Briggs's brains may have really been scrambled up by VK..I saw the last wo rounds of yesterday's fight on You Tube and it WAS brutal as hell...man what punishment Briggs soaked up. I'll say this...he really puts David Haye to shame..he lost bigger than a MF, but he stayed in there like a man and took this terrible beating....I have some respect for Briggs, but not for Haye.

Hopefully Briggs will retire..I hope he's ok...that was an awesome amount of punishment he took. Hey, these guys criticising Vitali and his power are way off base. No, he dosen't ship sleeping pills in his gloves but he's able to almost effortlessly tag a guy and do so consistantly...and he seems to always be in range..almost like a heavyweight Carlos Monzon...never in a hurry, but relentlessly laying on the punishment..almost clinically. 12 rounds to none??? No Vitali dosen't need to retire yet..he'll put Haye to sleep..Haye won't be able to man up to a battering like Briggs took. It may be more aesthically pleasing however, if brother Wlad gets Haye instead. A more dynamic ending would take place.

Challengers who don't go the distance rarely get rematches. Great fighters tend to win the title on their first chance, esp. when up against the older champion who's on his way out.

And for the millionth time, the cuts Lewis inflicted on VK were BAD, they spelled defeat. It is what it is. The statement "he was winning the fight until he was beaten" is kind of silly. But that's basically your argument.

Besides, I wasn't referring to VK in the Lewis match per se, I just mean he's missed out since then - through inactivity, dismal competition and BEING OVERSHADOWED by little brother.

I don't know where you find any certainty in the idea that VK could ever have beaten a 1999 version of Evander Holyfield.
Holyfield was already some degree past his best but VK has NEVER yet beaten anyone of that caliber.
He FAILED to beat a past prime Lewis - that much is CERTAIN. But of course you will argue that LL was not past prime ! Meanwhile you accept that Holyfield is 1999 was past prime. Whatever suits your agenda, as per usual.

I agree that VK's comeback from a 4-year layoff was impressive, but I'd also like to point out that it needs to be put in perspective. The holder of the WBC title, Sam Peter, was a vastly inferior fighter to the REAL champion, Wladimir Klitschko, and I'm sure you would agree. In fact Peter is one of a very poor crop of an alphabet titlist merry-go-round of recent years.
VK's coming back to beat him is not much more (if at all) impressive than Tyson's coming out of jail and beating Bruno after two tune-ups. If you want to argue it's better, that's fine, it's just not vastly different. And no one looks back on Tyson's 1996 accomplishments as any cornerstone of greatness.

You have to try to be objective Mendoza. You're right to defend VK as a seriously formidable fighter and an accomplished one. But a balanced look at the facts shows he's not on the level of a Lennox Lewis or an Evander Holyfield.

His accomplishments and the fact that he beat a prime Vitali while he was as old as Vitali is now. If Vitali and Wladimir were to fight now, and Vitali won even in a close fight, no one would argue that Wladimir would get the better of it prime for prime.

Vitali's record is not even as good as his brother's, let alone Lennox Lewis's. What is his best win, a 38 year old Corrie Sanders?

Foreman still had the same power in his second reign, but he wasn't as fast, or as busy from his youth, but seemed to be more accurate. The Michael Moorer knockout is a telling example of his power. All it took was jab-straight right. Two punches and Moorer didn't get up. Not many heavyweight can put a guy to sleep like Big George.
